I have Centurtylink DSL (10Mb). It's not much, but it's the best available in my rural area.
I own my own DSL modem so that I don't get ripped 5$ a month to rent a $50 piece of hardware.
My aging modem is on it's last legs. It drops out a lot, and reading the log file on it indicates it is rebooting at each dropout. Centurylink hasn't been much help in the past, but honestly I haven't even asked them about this one yet. Especially since my primary suspicion is a failing modem, and they have been cheap enough to replace (This will be my third time replacing it in 15 years).
Is there a modem out there that performs better than the rest, or are these things a commodity grade item (i.e. they're all the same)? I'm not looking for features like a router or wireless unit, I have a standalone wireless router running a custom firmware that I am satisfied with. I wouldn't rule out a DSL modem that has these features, but I would probably just use it in bridge mode and let my current router run the show. OEM firmwares probably wouldn't do some of the things I'm currently doing with my router.
Thanks!
