im planning on finally upgrading my awful machine for a new fancy one but at the same time would like to be getting my mum a computer. I would just build it for her but i think she wants something that comes from some sort of unified manufacturer so there could be some sort of easy warrenty solution (plus i wont always be around to diagnose a problem if she has one). So i was wondering if there was some decent pre built system distrubuter out there that wasnt deal but with somewhat comparable deals and not exactly the most expensive systems? Any help is good
 
Even if she was to resolve to a manufacturer's warranty most of them is not very helpful. I work at computer retailer and have had tons of complaints regarding manufacturer's extended warranty and that nonsense. To tell you the truth the best way to save money and actually still get more out of it is for you to maintain her computer.

I have heard that EMachines is actually a pretty reliable build at a pretty nice price point. Almost all reviews for their AMD setup gets high recommendation. If you get it from Compusa or something, purchase her the service plan from there because they actually provide service for parts and labor. Get the most basic one if parts and labor is all that you are looking for. I believe you can get away with 3 years of the basic service from them for about $150 or something.

Dell has treated me pretty well. I've Dell-t with them for several years, mostly with their entry-level servers. Speaking of which, Dell almost always has good deals on entry-level servers. I picked up some nice systems from them for friends, family, and myself. You get essentially a barebones system with a nice case and power supply (as well as motherboard, processor, hard drive, CD-ROM drive, etc.) for a mere $300-500, depending on the deal. Techbargains and SlickDeals frequently list very cheap Dell systems. Sure, not all of the components are top of the line, but that's when you take all the money you saved and put it towards upgrades at NewEgg. It's quite nice, really. Plus, if you want Dell to do any warranty services, just strip out the third-party parts and ship it to them. I found that it's a win-win situation, if you play your cards right.
 
Get the ad-special for Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City, or what have you, purchase a service plan, and your mum's set.
 
How about the company that's been winning tons of consumer satusfaction awards for the past 2 years? HP. Sure, a few people will snicker, but they haven't used our newer home lines. I work on them anytime my co-workers buy them, and I have been quite impressed.
 
HP is alright, but I will have to say that for intro level, the Emachines T3092 Minitower is far more superior. Nowadays HP is trying to phase out their old models and pushing out the Media Center Edition. This leaves you with the a630n as the bottom line on most retail stores. They charge about $900 for one of these while the T3092 is only $600. I believe they are using MSI boards on the T3092. Not too sure, we ran out of these models including the demo unit because of the price point.
 
Yeps, but they still receive good reviews. And I hardly see any of them coming back to the store with problems. Quality control is super tight that is why the prices are so cheap.
 
^^^i'll agree with that. I used to work at office depot for many years. The last year i worked there, emachines was one of the first I would recommend. We never had one returned. HP on the other hand.....

yeah, but emachines runs a seperate support dept. by themselves. their support is much better than gateway's, from what ive heard
 
I try to boycott all OEMs..

Especially without a doubt dell.

I was working on my girlfriends PC the other day and looked under the hood to see how filthy things were..

Was hoping to find an AGP slot so we could upgrade the crappy onboard video..

What did I find, not an agp slot, but the location where the slot should be, just a bunch of solder pads.. What a money making ploy..

Just one of the many reasons..
 
People PC may be an option for her. My grandmother has one and it's perfect for her. Internet acces + computer for $20 a month.

Otherwise I can't really recommend any large OEM's other than Dell for home use (poor experiences with all of them). Have you looked at local shops?
 
wow thanks for the feedback all of you.

Im checking out most of those options and in the end i figured i probably would just end up going with a dell if i couldnt convince her to just let me build the damn thing. But i'll check it all out.

i'm not so sure i really enjoy the whole peoplepc idea seems a little iffy and id prefer just a normal machine not something tied to a service. Either way i'll check it all out.
