Please Help!!!

Posted about this a while ago and the problem is back. The CPU usage in the task manager jumps from 0 - 40ish every 3 seconds while my system is idle. I had this problem previously and after formatting it went away but it just came back today. The process that is jumping is "System". It goes from 0 to 40ish. This is driving me crazy. Please help. Thanks.

download SpyBot Search & Destroy (google it), and run it to find all the spyware and crap on your computer.

then... goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run a virus scan. (it's online, it's free, it's always uptodate... can't beat it)

it's not a hardware problem, you got a virus or a worm or some nasty spyware or something.... and, if you goto trendmicro, it says at the top:

VIRUS ALERT

WORM_NETSKY.C is a high risk alert
WORM_NETSKY.B is a medium risk alert

... so, yea. put up a firewall and put your computer behind a router whenever you get the chance, it'll help avoid problems in the future. and make sure you keep your computer updated (ie: microsoft updates)

Uhhh... It does it while idle? Do you get a HDD Activity LED blinking? If so, it's just Windows putting it's favorite files into it's favorite places (read, it 'defragments' certain files on its own, and puts other files in 'safe places' incase of bad sectors). Otherwise, it could be a number of things. Unless this is killing some program you're running, you shouldn't even notice that your CPU is in use whiel you idle.

That's absolutely NOTHING to format over.

It's just Windows working in the background.

Uh... So, you ask the thread starter 'did you open any attachments in Outlook that came in emails that you didn't ask for?' If the answer is yes, then you would post that information.

Although, a virus scan might be a good idea. I perfer the symantec online virus scan, http://www.symantec.com/securitycheck/

I dont even open emails unless I know who it is from. And Lofapoo it is not Windows working in the background because whenever I use windows w/o this happening i get usually 0% idle. It shoudl not be jumping. I use adaware to get rid of spyware and I use Norton for virus scan. Still having problems.

you know. when people just say i use "xyz" for spyware/malware/adware etc. and leave it at that. and deny the amaizng synergestic effects of Adaware6 + Sybpot S&D..it pisses me off.

go get Spybot S&D.

start / run / scandisk
^--run it on Standard with automatically fix errors turned on

start / run / SFC
^--self exlpanatory. (you'll need your WinXP CD for this, it checks to make sure no sys files are corrupted etc.)

start / run / iexplore: www.windowsupdate.com
^--self explanatory.

go.

SpyBot hasn't updated their reference files since 2-2-04. If you're only using one, get Ad-Aware with latest reference files.

Unless I'm missing something all these suggestions, while good, are guesses. Why don't we get a little bit more info eh?

Gollum0000, please take a further look at the task manager-processes tab. Change the update speed to low (view-update speed) and sort the table by CPU useage. This should show you the process that is eating up CPU cycles.

Once we have that info we can do a little more than take pop shots.

Also, with ad-aware and spybot think about these programs as immature virii scanners. There was once a time where norton would catch major virus A but not B, and mcafee would catch major virus B but not A. This lead to many people running multiple virus scanners. I would do the same with ad-junk removers.

Now my CPU Usage is at a constant 100%. COOL!!! System Idle processes is at 0 (thought that was supposed to be at 99). explorer is at 70ish, System is 15ish, csrss.exe is like 15ish.

Did scandisk, ran spybot.... no luck.

What does SFC stand for?

I was going to suggest it was a service gone wrong if you used Dialup. Since that service wasn't mentioned, nevermind that.

Do you have a firewall? If so, check to see what processes are accessing what ports on the internet. That will shed some light on what is going on.
