Hi all....

I need some advice on what is the best RAM to get for my new set up...

I bought a bundle and it came with Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 MHZ, 2 x 2GB.

My specs are :

i7 2600k @ 4.7 ghz
MSI NGTX 560 ti Twin Frozer
Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 MHZ, 2 x 2GB dual channel
Corsair F60 SSD
ASUS P8PZ68-V Mobo

Im a bit annoyed that i cant even run Crysis 2 on max settings, i can all most but have to lower 2 settings for a smooth game.

So im thinking to increase my RAM to maybe help this a bit.

I have been looking at some Corsair Vengeance 1866 mhz 2 x 4 GB kits dual channel

Would this help ? Would i see any difference ?

Any advice would be really appreciated and thanks in advance,....

at what resolution?

It is the video card that holds you back.
4GB RAM should be enough.
 
Some games will be better off with 6 gigs of memory. As far as I know though with Crysis 2 you won't really see much of a difference. Certainly could help on more demanding games and applications though. With ram as cheap as it is it certainly wouldn't hurt for the future.

Ok i ended up buying 8gb of Corsair Vengeance dual channel and i am now having some problems...

I was running my CPU @ 4.7 ghz and my old ram @ its stock 1600 mhz speed. That OC profile i made used speedstep so when doing simple stuff it underclocked to 1.6 ghz .

When i installed my new ram i went to the bios and changed the XMP profile to the new profile for teh new ram, set the voltage to 1.5 which is what it says it should be and it all booted up fine. But as soon as i launched a game it froze up.

I played around a bit and found the only way i seem to have the ram at 1866mhz is if my system does not under clock its self ? So basically setting the line load cal setting to extreme which runs perfectly but the cpu stays on 4.7 ghz constantly...

I am a complete noob at OC'in but i read around and saw that basically i now cant run my cpu at 4.7 ghz AND have the ram at 1866mhz ?? Is that true ?

Is there a work around for this, i really wanna have my cpu running at least at 4.5ghz and my ram at 1866mhz but still underclocking too .. Please help :confused:

No that's not true. Since the bclk stays at 200 you should be able to run the ram at any speed it's capable of without causing any system instabilities.

You need to tweak your overclock. Work the oc manually. Don't use XMP; XMP settings tweak everything at once (I believe) so your ram running faster is throwing your oc off and either your cpu needs more Vcore or you might need to add some of the other settings from the guide.

Again do the oc manually, don't rely on XMP settings. At a minimum you need to do testing to find out what is failing at your current settings. Use memtest86+ to test the ram. If it completes at least 1 full pass, the ram is not the problem. You should let it run for a couple passes though, which will take several hours. You should also use a good cpu stresser.....I'd recommend using something linpack related like either LinX or IBT (Intel Burn Test).
 
Ah kool thanks for the link.... It was that link i used to get my 4.7 in thee first place and it reminded me of something i did :D

Yeah i THNK i have it stable again now PHEW :D

I was using the load line cal setting on Reg or off before with an auto - offset core voltage to keep the core voltage lower...

I did have 4.7ghz running at 1.368v with my old ram...

I have now changed that so the load line cal is on Very high or 75% and i set the - offset voltage down to 0.60 and its now stable though the core voltage is sat on 1.4v bang on when testing.

So i now have my 4.7ghz @ 1.4v never higher than 75c per core, 1866mhz ram but using the XMP profile so the RAM is on 1.5v which is lower than teh old ram on 1.65v.

So i guess as a nooob that the slight increase on my core voltage is balanced out by the now lower ram voltage ?

And Crysis 2 :D I can now run it smooth as a babys ass on max setttings EXCEPT 1 lol so a slight improvement :D

Apart from that im £70 down :( Now seems a waste that i paid that much to turn 1 setting up in a game lmfao :D

Think ill get another 560ti next :D
