Hello Experts,
I do onsite computer support and repair. I build alot of computers, but most of my clients only need minimum components. I'm getting ready to build a higher end machine for a client who has requested a quiet computer.
Here's the parts I have ordered
Intel Pentium D 930
Intel D945 GTP Motherboard
Antec Sonata Case
2 gigs Kingston ram
Asus N6800GT
Raptor 150
Samsung DVD Burner
Floppy
I would like to use a quieter Heatsink and Fan than the Intel stock and I would also like to swap the GPU cooler. Also feel free to critique this build. I have already ordered the parts, but this client is likely to buy 3-4 more of these from me. By the way, the machine will be used for his bookkeeper. It seems like overkill but this is what he wants. The reason for the expensive video card is only because he has 2 23" Apple widescreen monitors. The bookkeeper tends to run a lot of applications at once and they also use ACT!, Peachtree, and Timeslips which I guess like Hard Drive speed.
Thanks

I would look into these products as they provide better cooling for being quiet:

For the GPU - http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=40
For the CPU - http://www.arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=79&disc=

The fans with the Sonata look to be pretty quiet, so I think those should be ok.

I don't know about the harddrive though, are those quiet? I know its a highspeed (10k rpm I think) harddrive. Remember this will cause heat issues as well.

Yeah I would say that's overkill to. Wish I had a workplace able to give us computers like this..LOL

I hope this helps.

Thanks

Go with either the Ninja Scythe w/ S-flex 120mm fan or Thermalright Si-120 w/ Yate Loon 120mm. For the GPU you could go with an vf-900 or a silencer. Just don't forget about case fans, those have to be quiet too and the Yate Loons work great for that.

The best articles and discussion for silent fans is found at the silentpcreview site.

Just be careful about the balance of 'quiet' (low-flow) fans and 'sufficient' cooling. Intel processors and 6800GT vid cards dump a lot of heat in the case. Selecting case ventilation fans with too-low flow rates can result in very warm internal case temps.

I have some 'quiet' (Akasa amber) case-vent fans I don't use simply because they don't provide sufficient case ventilation.

Hope this helps!

You really can't go wrong with the artic-cooling solution above. They are very quiet and effective. Sure you could probably buy a little better CPU cooler at the expense of money, but it won't get you much more than that freezer 7 pro cooler will.

Will the Freezer 7 pro work with the Antec Sonata 2 case? Does the duct get in the way?
Thanks
