please help!! vista jumping mouse pointer

I just installed vista last night and I'm having an issue where the mouse randomly clicks itself at random occasions. This never happened with XP. This is most noticeable when I am typing a document or chatting.

In a text box, if I've typed out four or five words, randomly the mouse will left click and center the cursor on one of the middle words. So if I'm saying something like: "Hi Bob, how was your weekend?" I might get something like:

"Hi Bob hokendw was your we"

I am positive it's the mouse randomly clicking. I have a touchpad on a Compaq R3240. The only reason I am able to type out this post without driving myself nuts fixing the random left clicks is that I can turn off the touchpad with the push of a button. I know I can easily remediate this problem by attaching a corded mouse, but that's such a hassle.

Has anyone else experienced this "random left click" problem? And for those that haven't, do you have any advice on how to handle this issue?

I can't make the problem come up with an exact button combination, it's pretty random. If I have the cursor outside of the text box, vista will left click on the window the text box is on.
 
Come on guys, there's gotta be one guru out of all your guys in here that can help me out.
 
I feel your pain...sorry, no help here...

I have had the random jumping mouse and random l click issue on/off with xp and now vista...very irritating in Oblivion when you blow your last mana on a fireball and at the last second your aim is off. I have searched extensively and tried the following...

1) Obvious mouse cleaning/surface changes/new batteries
2) Turn off smart move/ intelligent pointing
3) Adjust mouse buffer in registry
4) Turn off "hide pointer when typing" option in mouse properties
5) New/old logitech drivers
6) Increase/decrease sampling rate
7) Alternatively trying Setpoint v/s OS settings (From logitech setpoint software)

These are all suggestions I have seen at various sites...sometimes I have no problems, sometimes it is horribly frequent...does not seem to matter what programs or processes are running...it happens in all games and windows XP and Vista...I have not tried other mice, people post that this helps or doesnt....

Sorry. At least this is a bump, huh?

BTW I am using logitech MX 3000 mouse/keyboard combo...Auto update just downloaded a setpoint update and my mouse is acting fine this evening...hah, too early to tell since this is a random problem at best. I'll let you know...
 
Thanks for the huge response, I really appreciate it! I tried tinkering with the mouse settings as you mentioned, but alas, to no avail. The setpoint update you mention probably refers to a logitech mouse, right? My mouse is a laptop touchpad and it is built in. Unlike your problem, mine did not exist prior to installation of vista.

My laptop only has 512MB of ram. Any chance this could be the case? I have a 1 gb replacement in the mail that will replace one of the 256MB modules to get to a grand total of 1.25 GB.
 
Are you sure you're not causing this?

I know with some touchpads, if you double tap the pad will act like a left click. Your hand may be inadvertantly touching the pad causing this.
Vistas default may be at a higher sensitivity or it enabled this feature where as it may have been off in your settings for XP.

Try covering the pad with something hard and thin and see if this contimues.
 
Is there a way to turn off the fact that vista sees a double tap as a left click?

I tried typing with my hands raised in the air and the left click problem did not occur at all.

Then I typed with my left palm touching the laptop with the right hand in the air. This was ok as well.

When I type with just the right hand resting on the laptop, this is when the left click will randomly occur.

Any ideas what I do now?
 
Is there no setting in you mouse properties in control panel.....errr....personalization menu now?

It seems as though I remember seeing a on/off setting somewhere but cant recall where it is.
 
My relentless search last night for the switch which turns off the double tap click feature of the touchpad resulted in a fight over the phone with my girlfriend over me not being sensitive enough to her feelings.

So no, I don't believe vista comes with an on/off switch.

I did try installing a touchpad driver from synaptics.com though, as they specialized in touchpads. That driver installed just fine. However, I wasn't able to find the switch with that driver either.

One thing I noticed about my touchpad just now is that the portion on the right of the touchpad which is reserved for up down scrolling no longer works as intended. It is now an extention of the touch pad, acting as a moving surface. I'm not sure if this is a result of the new driver or simply a windows vista "feature".

I just typed the entire last paragraph with my right palm shifted half an inch to the right, away from the up down scroll region. It didn't skip once. Looks like I found my problem.

So my search shouldn't be for how to turn off the double tap feature. It should be to fix the designated portion of my touchpad so that it can scroll again rather than move.

Any ideas?
 
Sounds like a driver update down the road may fix this. Chalk it up to OS growing pains. I'd get a USB mouse for the time being and keep looking around for fixes.
 
You need to know the manufactured of your touchpad. Synapse does make the majority, but you may not have that installed on your laptop. Check your laptop's website to find exactly what touchpad you have and download the upgraded drivers from their site or the touchpad's website. I had a problem with my Microsoft Trackball Optical mouse, went to the MS site, downloaded the updated driver's and no more problems...the same thing with my Fingerprint Reader...new drivers, no problem.
 
I have a compaq laptop, but I see nothing on their website for an updated vista driver. I'll take another look later I guess. Thanks for the tip.

And thats why it only takes 1 time to get burned from those companies. I swear if they had thier way all PC's would be non-modular and non-upgradeable like the laptop market. "Were sorry, we can't support you with a software update. Not because we don't want to, but because it's not certified. Why don't you look at our certified machines."

Sorry for the way OT rant. Reading that pitch opened up a eight year old HP wound. Never again.
 
Yeah, it's pretty lame how they write a statement like that to cover their ass. I can't imagine that recoding a mouse driver from XP to vista format would be that big of a burden. Everything else is working perfectly on this laptop, so all that BS about "non-HP certified capable PCs" is a load of crap. It's not the greatest system in the world, but it definitely surpasses the minimum requirements.

I feel ya on the 8 year old wound. When I was in high school (14 years ago), I had a Compaq desktop 486 and swore never to buy a compaq again after experiecing many upgrade woes (proprietory hard drive holder anyone?). I'm ashamed to admit that I went out 12 years later to buy another one of their products.

Ok, I found a ghetto fix for my sensitive touchpad. I taped a piece of folded over post-it note onto the side of the touchpad (which was designated for scrolling in XP but redesignated to a touchpad extention in vista). No more issues of random left clicks.
 
seriously you can't disable tap to click? That is uber retarded :(.

I will have to check a laptop running vista at my next opportunity to look
 
I've spent 2 hours researching it and I found no viable solution for vista.
