I am buying a completely new PC who's primary purpose will be gaming.
Components that i have so far picked for it are:

Intel 'CPU LGA1150 Intel® Core™ i7-4790K
GeForce GTX970
DIMM DDR3 2x8GB 2400MHz Kingston HyperX Savage CL11
MB: Z97 Intel chipset, LGA1150 socket, ATX (not sure what model)
900W Raidmax Vampire RX-900GH 80PLUS GOLD

I need some help deciding between the following HDDs (not interested in getting a true SSD at this moment):
Western Digital 1TB 3.5" SATA III 64MB 7200rpm Black
SEAGATE SSHD 1TB + 8GB 3.5", SATA III, 7200rpm, 64MB
Western Digital 1TB SATA III, 64MB, 3.5", 7200rpm, Entrprise RE
SEAGATE 1TB, 3.5", SATA III, 64MB, Barracuda 7200.14

All have 7200rpm 3.5" Sata3 64MB cache, but i have questions about specific things:
- How does the "WD Black" mentioned above compare to the "Seagate Barracuda" mentioned above?
- I have heard that all the WD Black and Seagate Barracuda HDD series are (more-or-less) old and/or discontinued and should be avoided when possible?
- Are the new Seagate SSHD actually good for gaming? I heard that regular 7200rpm HDD are better for gaming than the SSHD ones (also with 7200rpm)?
- Is there a Western Digital counterpart to the Seagate SSHD mentioned above that would be good for gaming?
- WD Enterprise RE is, i guess, for business purposes. However are any of those features perhaps useful for a gaming PC, or is it of no importance?

My experience has been that the WD Black is much more reliable than the Seagate drives I have used, Spec's wise they are similiar

Compared to SSD perhaps, outside of SSD and SAS drives they are one of the best HD's available, at least the WD Black

Typically better then a standard HD but not as good as a SSD in terms of performance
- Is there a Western Digital counterpart to the Seagate SSHD mentioned above that would be good for gaming?
Unknown, not that I have seen

Why avoid an SSD? I highly recommend a SSD Primary drive and a WD Black 2nd for game storage, my current system is setup this way and works really well.
 
REs are reliable and fast, theyre currently the best consumer related drives, i only use those, they can take a real punishment.
 
Get an SSD and a cheap 1 or 2tb "green" drive. It's worth it.

Taking quite the gamble on that 900 watt power supply aren't you?
 
1TB HDDs are 2011 technology, which is why you're seeing comments about discontinuation. 4TB HDDs are the reliable ones now; 3TB HDDs were not great and should be skipped.

Don't bother with an SSHD. Those are for when you have room for only one storage device, such as in a laptop, and you want some of the performance of an SSD and some of the capacity of an HDD.

What's your backup plan? If you're thinking of just having one internal drive and not backing it up to anything, think again, especially if you're using 1TB drives from 2011.

Edit: oh yeah, why do you need a 900W PSU? A good 500W-600W from Seasonic would be much better. Stay away from Corsair, they are not what they used to be.

Indeed, they are great drives, reliable and fast and sturdy. Not the quietest though but they are not meant to be :)

@ op sell that outrageous PSU and get a Seasonic 500-600w instead and then pick up a SSD and/or a WD Black or Blue with 1Tb platter(s) (use http://rml527.blogspot.fr/2010/10/hdd-platter-database-western-digital-35.html ). If you are really allergic to SSDs, maybe a 1Tb VelociRaptor instead? (fast, sturdy and reliable since they are enterprise grade like the RE drives)

Any budget, maybe?

Of the listed, I'd recommend the WD Black. I definitely wouldn't try to save a few dollars by going with the Green line - over the life of the PC, the difference in price is extremely minor. Nor would I buy Seagate.
 
GET THE SSD

Seriously, it's the best upgrade you can make to a PC. I can't stand having to work on or use a PC that has a mechanical drive. You get spoiled once you've switched.
 
Get an SSD, sure, but he listed SSHD, not SSD. And SSHD is much closer to HDD than it is SSD. And it's a Seagate.
