Okay I really need help on this one, my sisters Gateway took a drive on saturday and gateway and bestbuy are telling her that she will lose everything to get it back. wont boot into safe mode or anything its windows vista home premium. I am running windows XP pro. I need to find a way to save all the pictures on her computer. She lost her newborn son monday and thats where every last picture is stored. I was gonna try a bootable USB but everything I found online said it will only handle fat32 and I know her drive is NTFS. I really need to come through on this one so any help is really appreciated.
 
Take the hard drive out of her machine and mount it inside yours. Hopefully it'll be an ATA/IDE which makes things simple. If hers is SATA and yours is ATA/IDE, that might be an issue.

But, if they're both ATA/IDE, when you attach it to yours and boot, Windows will detect the drive, install the necessary support - it might ask you to reboot, if so do it - and then after that you'll be able to read her hard drive and do the data transfer like any other copy operation.

If she had her My Documents marked as Private, it will prevent you from accessing it. That's fine, just change the permissions on the folder and take ownership. I won't go into extreme details over this so you don't get confused.

Suffice to say, shops like Geek Squad and the other places prefer to just restore a machine to factory condition instead of actually putting time and effort into recovering data most of the time.
