Im having trouble with my new Radeon 9800. I replaced my old geforce 2 ultra with the radeon and fired it up using DVI.... but no picture... monitor was on and works fine but did not get a signal from the new radeon. I also tried using the VGA and still no picture, no post, nothing at all. Im thinking it may be the power supply. I have a 300 watt ps which is the minimum spec for the 9800 series. Any ideas?! I unpluged all my devices and pluged only the card up to see if I could at least see the post but that didnt work either. Could this card be a lemon? The video cards fan is on and running so I know the card has power.

Here is my computer:
1.1 ghz AMD Tbird
Abit KT7-Raid w/ AGP ver 2.0
384 MB PC133 SDRAM
 
maybe ati put in a "if this board has sdram on it -> self destruct" option that you forgot to click off :p

lol i hope not! this is just a temp upgrade till i buy a new computer next year
 
I can tell you how to fix it :)

The problem is that on certain revisions of the current ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, it has a conflict with the AGP Bus on older motherboards. It trips an overvoltage circuit, and it will not POST.

You have two options:

1) Turn off computer. Unplug additional molex connector. Power on computer. VERY QUICKLY plug in molex connector AFTER power is on. Success.

or

2) Upgrade to a modern motherboard.

I had to do the molex trick for about a month on my KR7A-RAID before I got an NF7-S. The card works fine now.

is there no other way?
 
Are you decent with electronics? You can figure out what size capacitor is needed to delay power for that split second and wire it inline on the molex that is connected to the video card.

Or, you can splice a power switch into the molex and run that externally so it's easier to turn the power on and off to the video card.

Barring these options, no.

I would recommend a newer motherboard, you can get a refurbished NF7-S for 29 bucks, don't be cheap - you just bought a 200 dollar video card! However, if you really cannot afford to get a new motherboard right away, as you would likely need new RAM too, then this really will NOT cause problems, I did it for a month.
 
Sounds like he has the same problem as me, but I have a pretty new motherboard (EP8RDA3I). Though I have a 9700 Pro.

There is also a BIOS issue with some motherboards and the 9700 Pro. Check for an update.
 
i will have to give it a try. Looks like i need to do some upgrades. Thanks for helping

the unplug and plug back up trick did not work. Im going to take the card in to work in the morning and hook it up to one of the computers I use. Unfortunatly they are 2 yrs old so I hope that they have power supply w/ 300+ watts.
 
i put the card in my office comp and it works fine... guess i will have to get a new computer. Im going to get a 3500+ 939 by amd :) for now then ill donate it to my mom when I build my computer after christmas, whahahaha
