Please HELP! PC will not power off

Greetings,

I have a problem that I hope you guys can help me with. I'm running XP Pro SP 2 and when I do a Shutdown -> Power Off the PC will shutdown OK and then power off. There is a click as the PS powersoff and the HDs start to spin down and all of the lights go off. Then less than a 1/4 second later it immediately powers back on and boots without problem. Every "wake on" feature is set to "stay off" or "disabled".

I've researched this problem for the last week and I have tried every registry hack, software patch and bois tweak and none have worked. In desperation, I pulled the board motherboard from the case and set it on my desk with only a PSU, video card, hard drive and keyboard attached. I did a fresh install of XP Pro and tried the shutdown/power off thing again. No luck. I've tried new PSUs, video cards, and hard drives all without luck. The only comming thread is the motherboard.

Once upon a time I could instruct XP to shutdown/power off and the PC would power down just fine. Nothing has changed either software or bios or hardware since this problem has started. Does any one have any ideas or suggestions?

sounds like you did a good amount of troubleshooting and have isolated it to the motherboard. this could DEFINATLY be a mobo issue as the mobo controls all the power off and resetting functions via pins. try and RMA ur mobo or contact the manufacturer about the problem. how long have you had this board? was there ever a time when you were running it OCed or did anything that may have caused long term wear on your mobo?
 
Yes resetting CMOS would be a good idea, first of all. Next, if you reinstalled Windows, make sure any traces of the previous installation are deleted, such as the windows directory. If you only reinstalled over the files or repaired, theres a chance some files could have remained that are interfering with shutdown. Also, in BIOS, change the power switch setting to 4 sec if it isn't already set for that, else change it to instantaneous setting... And change the power settings...Disable ACPI if its enabled, enable ACPI if it's disabled. And turn on power saving measures in Windows to see if it might jumpstart it.
