I'm going fricken crazy. My computer died 4 weeks ago after hearing a "pop" when it was formatting. I immediatly though it must have been a capistor that had blown somewhere. So I go and take everything apart and search over everything carefully and came to the conclusion it must have been the power supply. But before i could RMA it, I borrowed a PSU from a friend, and what do you know? It doesnt work. So I RMA'ed the mobo to Abit and promptly got one back. HELL, what do you know again? It doesnt work. So I go to newegg and buy a brand new Antec True 430 Watt PSU and get everything plugged in, and IT DOESNT WORK again! I took everything out except the mobo (I took out the mem, vid card, and cpu) and tried turning it on, NOTHING Happens! That damn red LED on the mobo turns on every time, but when I turn on the switch, nothing happenes. what could it be?? I know my memory and graphics card are fine, because they work in other computers. I have no idea if my cpu is fried, and I have no way of testing it. Heck could abit have given me a dead mobo? Should I RMA it mobo back to Abit? Please give suggestions! Heck, I know i'm forgetting to mention something... Thanks....
 
Sorry man, but the only way to test things like this is to swap them. Buy a cheap ass Duron or something and trow it in the board just to see if it will work. You can get one for like $30 at a computer show.

well, No. It was in the middle of reformatting when it turned off so I wouldnt be suprised if it was damages, but Its not the HD's fault that it won't turn on.

it very well could be the problem... it sounds like the motor on the hard drive blew.... you very well might need a new one... try the hard drive next... if you haven't done that already
 
I unplugged the HD and it sill did nothing, that's not the problem (not to say its not broken)

from what your saying it's not POSTing...

try this, if you haven't

unplug everything except mobo, cpu, ram, and ps...does it turn on?? if it does then the issue is somewhere else, if it dosen't something there is messed

try differant ram, try differant cpu, if both of those dont make a difference then the issue is with either mobo or PSU...since you've already swapped PSU and mobo...in all honestly I can see it being ram or CPU

keep us updated
 
I agree cpu or ram. Pull the ram power on listen for the beeps. Try the same with the video card pulled. Test test test...
 
ack, i thought i said i already unplugged EVERYTHING. only the 2 power connectors on my mobo are connected, and still absolutly nothing, no beeps, no fans spinning at all, that red led on the pcb just stays on. I've bitched to abit to send me another board and I think they will soon. Thank god their RMA service is very fast...

Yea, try building it outside the case. I always test outside of the case before a build or rebuild.

If you weren't connecting the power switch cables, or they were in wrong, it may not power up at all with just the two power connections inside.
 
holy crap!!! it WORKS. I just assembled it out of the case and what do you know? IT ACTUALLY WORKS. THANKS A LOT for that advice:)
 
its amazing what starting over can fix, take a look at windows for example, doesn't work, restart, still doesn't work, reformat. congrats on getting it to work
 
No problem. Now we know that you have an internal short. Take the very long road and put everything back in the case. First pull all of your standoffs and get a black sharpie. Gently set the mobo in and put a dot through the screw holes so you will have a good idea where your standoffs need to go. Then mount your motherboard. Slow and easy win's the game.
