Please help me select a slim/sleek beginner digital camera.

Current camera:
My current camera is a crappy used (Ebay) huge Canon 4MP camera with 8.3x optical zoom.
I bought it because I thought I wanted a camera with an optical zoom over over 3x. I think the
camera may be dieing because whenever I use it I get really crappy pictures no matter what I
do with the settings.

The event:
I am attending PAX 2007 and I will of course want to take some pictures and maybe a few short
videos.

What I am looking for:
  • Thin, small and sexy. I would like to fit it in my jean pocket inside a soft pouch.
  • It needs to accept SD memory cards. I have some SD memory cards already.
  • I would like to be able to record short videos with audio. The quality does not have to be awesome.
  • Something that costs $250 or less brand new.
  • MegaPixels are not a big deal. Anything over 5MP is fine.
  • Something simple. I am not into using different modes all the time. Usually when I take pictures,
I either have the flash on or off.

Cameras I am interested in:

Casio's Exilim series.
Some of these cameras get really nice reviews, and others not so much. If you can recommend
me specific models, that would be a huge help.

This Canon PowerShot Elph (SD750) got a good Cnet review:

I like the fact that the movie format is AVI and not Quicktime.

This Canon PowerShot (SD1000) got a good review from Cnet as well:

It is actually smaller than the SD750 Elph and it is cheaper. So yeah, forget the SD750 I guess.

Please post your suggestions!:)

I went to Best Buy after my meeting and I checked out their cameras. Out of the compact cameras
that were there the Casio Exilim EX-Z700 was my favorite. It is on sale for $179.99 and apparently
the camera is pretty good.

So unless any of you strongly object to me buying this camera, this is the one I will be getting soon.

Check this thread in the [H]ot Deals section.

YMMV, but you can get an Canon SD100 for about $200 from Office Depot (hurry, this week only).

Was camera shopping with someone, and he got the Canon SD1000. Even without big price breaks/savings, you can order it for $210 - 220 from places like www.bhphotovideo.com

The Canon Exilim is not bad from what I've heard, so if you like it, go for it.

Thanks for the link to that thread. I will check out the SD1000 in person and if I like it I will try to
get them to honor the Circuit City coupon.
