I got my paradigm titans today but I am not gonna get sonic impact T-amp until 3/8/05. I am also getting good canare cables along with that. The guy from whom I got these speakers told me to test the speakers within few days. I need some help quickly. How do I connect paradigm titans to emu 0404 or SB live without an amplifier? What cables exactly do I need to get from Radio Shack? I don't wanna spend a lot of money.
Any help appreciated.
 
dont do it for very long, but you can buy a miniplug to RCA adaptor, and a cheap pair of RCA cables (buy utter junk RCA cables for this cine youll be destroying them). Get a good RCA adaptor though, Radioshack.com is a good source to shop from. They have a gold plated plastic bodies unit for $6 that is superbe....I use it myself, and a similar unit is included with the Swans M-200 computer speakers.

Now, split the cable into separate left and right cables, and then slice one of the ends off of each. Strip this end down, and use the center conductors are positive and the other as negative. If these cables were of non-coaxial build, use the color red for right positive, and then remeber the color of the negative on the right cable, and use that as negative for the left.

Note that you will be UNDERPOWERING those speakers GREATLY...don't even try to do anything more than a sanity check like this, since it will be rather easy to mess up your tweeters underpowering them this bad....a soundcard is lucky to even put out a clean 1-2wpc.

Would that even work? Check out the stats for the line outputs on a stereo, the output impedences are in the 10000 ohm range. Also, consider that the headphone port on the average CD player outputs between 10 and 35mW, and I'd think that line level outputs are just as low, or worse.
 
I used ot do it a long time ago with my old ESS1688 soundcard....those had about 2wpc, which was considered ungodly and still is for a computer sondcard....there were also issue with using them with receivers where if the sound card's volume knob was all the way up you could cause all kinds of issues.

In general soundcards have been known to put out more power than most of us think...it's just it's not very clean output. Keep in mind passive computer speakers can take far more power than a headphone.


There is a good chance it won't work at all, but he might get lucky.


If all else fails, go and buy the cheapest bookshelf stereo you can find, go for the $25 GPX or whatever. Even a boombox with detachable speakers can be molested enough to work with regular speakers.
 
actually I just done this with my audigy2 ZS and a single cerwin vega V5S bookshelf speaker...and it works, it just doesn't get very loud...but it is loud enough to see if a speaker works.....actually I kinda like the volume level it puts out...nice for background music in a bedroom.
 
My roomate's portable DVD player was laying around. I tried that but it didn't work. I will pick a small boombox or something. Thanks Mustang.
 
portable DVD players won't have enough power output, it's just comuter soundcards that have beefier opamps on their main outs than most consumer portable stuff.

If you try it on a boombox, it has to be the kind with detatchable speakers. In that case, you jsut re-wire it so the speakers to be tested are connected instead of the ones for the boombox.
