Well, I guess I'll try to describe this...

win xp home
1gb c xms
barton 2500+
a7n8x-deluxe rev2 nforce2
radeon 9700pro

I built this pc I believe a little over 2 years ago (don't quote me on that).

I originally had 1 drive.. western digital 8mb cache 7200rpm 80gb. One day in Everquest it was lagging hard and I found the driv ein PIO mode with ide errors in admin logs...turns out it was overheating and i fixed the problem with an increase of the fan speed fan embedded in my slide out hd bay.

long story short, my sister is dumb and cannot walk 5 feet to the bathroom to use her hairdryer, so my pc suffered numerous power cuts form the fuse blowing in the house, though it is behind sufficient power surge protector.

sometime during the pc's life I added a second drive, same build except 120gb.

first drive is partitioned into c/d/e for windows, cache files, programs. second drive is all anime. I started to get clicking and i assumed it was the first drive as it happened after a powerup from a blown fuse >_> I don't remember if this was before or after I bought the slave drive. 80 and 120 are on primary ide (yes i know wd drives are tempermental with jumper settings, they are correct for the setup).

Anyway, the clicking was once in a blue moon. I had a liteon dvd and a liteon cd burner on the secondary ide...however i ended up disconnecting them later on to install a dvd burner liteon on secondary master. I also pulled a 120 maxtor 8mb cache 7200rpm form a pc where it was the MASTER drive with windows installed. I installed it as a slave on secondary ide and completely wiped the drive, slow format..it now houses everything else I d/l.

my computer started to get worse, as one day (believe it was a week after the maxtor was installed) I started getting clicking while trying to load windows to the point where the system would lock up and not get into windows without a reset 3 or 4 times. Once I was in windows I had no problems except that many times firefox would light up my hd light for minutes randomly when loading a page but would get through. I thought maybe mbr was damaged, and i did try to fix mbr and eventually fixboot. None of them solved the problem. Recently Now I've gotten locked up in windows and in everquest from clicking. I decided to replace the main drive with a seagate 120gb 8mb cache 7200rpm.

When I installed it, I took out the wd 80gb and replaced it with the seagate and booted up and pt in my winxp cd. the computer hung at ide checking ~_~ a repower got me to loading windows on the cd...drivers laoded fine but it took extroirdinarly long to load "windows" I eventually got to partitioning screen and told it to make a primary on the new drive for it's entire size(minus the normal 8mb). I let it sti for an hour but I believe it froze as my hd ligt was red permanently the entire time...I gave up and powered down(which might of killed the drive..or maybe it already was dead).

Anyway, I tried a few more times, half the time the pc doesnt even see the new drive. I've tried every drive combonation. I'm currently back on the original 80gb wd and was able to get into windows. ii disconnected all other drives and when i plug in the seagate to primary ide slave, or secondary master, or secondary slave the pc won't load windows. I've even tried plugging in the drive while i was in windows, but no go.

I'm really starting to think, maybe the main drive isn't dead? or maybe it is dying and the new drive is dead AND one or both of my iide ports is/are damaged? The computer seems to have much more trouble getting into windows when I have drives on the 2nd ide (even optical).

I had to sell the parts to my 2nd pc for bills, so I don't have anything to swap really. i can't afford another motherboard to "see". What pisses me off is I will lose my $50 mail in rebate for this seagate since I bought it the last day of the MIR..if I return it, the new one will be a day past on the receipt.

I'm not the hacker elite pc artist o_O ..but I can get through software problems easy, have programming and networking behind me and I've built more than 10 pc's >>_<< I just hope someone can help me out as I don't really have extra hardware lying around. ANY suggestions are helpful if you think you know the problem (please don't tell me to take it somewhere). I've even changed out the ide cables if I didn't mention that..

from this comment...99% probability your IDE channel on the MoBo is borked....you could try an auxillary controller card, I think I have a promise card laying around that you could use......you'll have to disable the primary IDE in the bios...and then let the card detect the drives. Try a clean install with one HDD and one optical drive. Ensure Jumpers are set correctly. I'd put the single HDD on the primary and the optical on the secondary...both as master. If this dosent work......controller is borked. As far as the hard drives.....download the diagnostic disk from the hardware mfg and a win 98 boot disk as well. disconnect everything except for the hard drive and a floppy and boot to an A:/.......then run the diagnostic routine......if you have a hard drive that is a clicker it most likely is dead.

Makes sense........bios is searching for IDE 0 to boot......try setting IDE 2 as the primary boot in the bios and then plug the drive in as a secondary master.

(yesterday I tested the clicker wd 80gb drive and it passed smart, quick test, and extended test using the Western Digital software I downloaded from their site...said I had no bad sectors too).

I'm back and I really need help =( I'm typing this up on my Mother's pc...

I brought back the seagate and got a new one and installed it with just it on primary ide and my dvd drive on secondary ide. It booted up and got to irq's, blah blah and the motherboard's nvidia boot system came up giving me the error PXE-E61 = media test failure, check cable and told me it could not find a system disk.

(yes my cables are correct..I just assume the error is form having no system disk or maybe my controllers are shot).

I put my win xp cd in my dvd drive and rebooted and got into windows(cd) just fine. I Partitioned the new disc and did a full format and installed Windows. During the installation, the monitor kept making a syncing sound, but the light never turned yellow. The screen kept jumping and going completelyt black...then showing what it normally says. Over and over and over and over and over... until it got to the section where you enter your name and time, etc where it stood fine. When it went back to finishing the install it started again. When I got to the point where it was logging into windows, the screen was fine again. I got into windows and after being bored >_> I restarted the pc to check it out, and I got into windows fine again. Now, I powered down and plugged in the maxtor 120gb on secondary ide(slave cable select) and the WD 120gb(not the old wd 80 main) on primary(slave cable select).

I booted up and got to the windows welcome screen where it froze...I rebooted and it got stuck right before the section that detects what's on ide's. I powered down and removed everything except the Seagate and dvd drive again. I booted up and it would not get into Windows. I just got a blinking cursor and the hd light would blink in exact intervals about 1 second apart. I tried again and no luck, got stuck during bootup.

I am now fed up with this and will not install my old main 80gb drive to see if i can get back into it's windows. I have a feeling it's either the motherboard or the PSU. I can't really afford to replace both just to find out...

The symptoms seem to point to both of them. I did check mbm5 earlier before I removed the old 80gb main and my voltages were (this is form memory, may not be exact)

the 12v lines were each 11.90, all the other lines were super close to their proper readings I remember... the only discrepency I remember was one 5 volt line was 4.96, the other was around 4.4 to 4.5...one of those.

At this point I really hate pc's >_>

The problems occur with the old drive by itself, with alll 3 drives, with the seagate I brought back and with the brand new seagate i replaced it with. The wd might be dying, but there IS something wrong not related to the drives I'm sure of that at this point.

Mike is a true friend and is allowing me to come over after work tonight to use his psu. I built him a 007 pc (do do do dooo!). He has the same PSU and motherboard as myself(except his is an a7n8x-e ...the improved version of mine). Our pc's are almost identical, save for ram(kingston hyper-x) and video(9800pro).

I'm going to test his psu in my system. if the problem still persists then I know there is a problem with my board. After that, I will try my drives in his pc with his motherboard and psu, just incase....because who knows, my psu and board might be damaged(so i'm not willing to try my psu in his pc).

Well, I'm back ~_^

I tried to disable my primary ide controller but there was no option for it in my bios. Instead, i took the seagate drive and placed it on the secondary ide by itself and rebooted, but I had the same problems as usual ~_~ I checked my voltages in my bios and noticed that the 5v rail got even lower and dropped down to 4.3 =( 12v was 11.9, 3 was around 3.2 something, and the 5v was 4.3 >_<

I hooked up my friend's psu (antec 430w) and tried again. We managed to get into windows once, but it sat at the welcome screen for 5 minutes before doing so, and everything was lagged. Start menu took 1 minute to open from clicking, etc. After a reboot i could not get into windows successfully again. (his psu's voltage readings in my bios were identical, except his 5v was 4.9+ ....)

At this point I pretty much know that my board is shot. As for the psu, well I'm not sure..but it seems safer to maybe just replace it as well..

Any thoughts? (480w antec is more expensive than a trueblue 480w antec on Newegg o_O and the psu prices shot up higher than they cost when I bought mine over 2 years ago... looks like an a7n8x-e and a new psu will cost me $200..)
