I finally upgraded my computer. This is the new config:
AMD Sempron 2800+ (1.6ghz)
TUL XPRESS Mainboard 200P (AX480A7) - OnBoard RealTek HD Audio and NIC enabled
("Chipset by ATI Radeon XPRESS 200P")
1gb DDR400 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce PCX 5750 (PCIe Video)
2x WDC WD1200BB (120g HDD) - Primary Channel
1x Matsushita DVD-RAM - Secondary Master
1x Plextor PX-780A DVD-R - Secondary Slave
Windows XP SP2, clean install
drivers current as of 1/10/06
...
Every video application I've run (except R6:Raven Shield) has given me the following video problem:
It starts with what looks like "transparent" scan lines on close review, which when I hadn't looked closely looked like some kind of sparkling. Within five minutes of starting, the textures seem to randomly distort like random triangles across the screen.
My experience suggests that this type of distortion is related to a GPU or video memory failure due to heat, however the "touch test" against the running card indicate that its heat sink is scarcely warmer than my armpit. I've tried a few things, but I'd rather not go into that as my question hopes to find every available idea including what I've tried and hopefully some things I haven't.
My unfortunate conclusion thus far is that the card is defective. I don't want this to be true.
It seems I now have more power with which to do alot less.
Any suggestions what might cause this behavior, and what I can try to do to cure it?
edit: I ran 3DMark05 on it, and most of the video artifacts occurred during the advanced vertex shader test. I ran only that test, and it ran smoothly (well, as smoothly as the card could be expected to I suppose). But then I looped the test 6 times and by the end of the 5th loop, the artifacts were running rampant.
