I just lost about 7 gigs worth of media on my computer that took me nearly a decade to build up because I was screwing around with iTunes and messed something up.

Is there any way at all to recover lost data that isn't in my recycle bin? Any programs I can download or buy? I haven't rebooted my computer (Win XP Pro) since it happened... does windows have a disk recovery thing to restore the way the harddrive was at the time of the last reboot?

Please please help, I am scared as shit.

PC inspector might be able to help. Just, whatever you do:

DON'T create any new files
DON'T install File Recovery on your current drive--run it off a floppy or CDROM!
DON'T defrag/move files/whatever
DON'T restart if you can help it.

Just run the program (off a floppy, secondary hard drive, CDR...), and see if your files are there.

You might actually want to download the program onto a second computer, burn it/copy it, then use it in your computer.

I bought a program for doing just that when I had accidently erased a ton of stuff (actually a virus did it for me). Anyway, $40 and called Undelete. It recovered the big files (like MP3s and bigger) but unfortunately, it only recovered some of the pictures that were irreplaceable. Anyway here it is. I see they are at version 4, I think I had version 3. I have long lost the program since but I backup stuff on DVD now so I will not lose things again.

My understanding of XP is vague, i don't know if file recovery will work in your situation. Can anyone say if it will work? Just use one of the programs these [H]ard dudes have suggested (and the tips. Follow the tips!!).
