I'm trying to hook up my HP Envy 14 (beats) to a 5.1 Audio System (Logitech Z-5500) via USB (since the Envy doesn't have the green/black/orange ports for 5.1). I bought the Aureon 5.1 USB MKII and have been able to get audio to the two "front" speakers but none of the others. The sub-woofer is working a little bit but no where near as much as my z-2300 does. This leads me to believe that it's set up as stereo or 2.1 somewhere but I cannot configure the SPDIF Interface which seems to be in charge of the output to the speakers in the audio control panel.

I've tried following the PDF on Terratec's website but run into problems once I click "Finish" as seen on page 4. The error message I recieve is "Format not supported by the Devices". I am only getting audio from the front two speakers if I shift the output to SPDIF Interface, something entirely omitted in the manual and not configurable. If I leave it with USB Audio like in the manual I get squat.

I've also tried configuring the SPDIF Interface in beats (which I find very limited) but it also will not allow me to configure anything. Under properties for this output type both DTS Audio and Dolby Digital are checked whereas Microsoft WMA Pro Audio isn't. I'm honestly extremely new to this as some of you will probably have figured out but I can usually work these things out. I've been at it for two days now though and am becoming quite frustrated.

Has anyone used a similar system that might have some tips for me? Any further information you might require?
 
you should use analog for the z-5500s on PC. the spidf is more intended for consoles.

bc you will not get 5.1 for games as they don't output trie 5.1 for pc games. movies should work fine for 5.1 though.
 
SPDIF can carry three formats:

2.0 PCM
5.1 Dolby Digital
5.1 DTS

Games and music on the PC typically don't use Dolby/DTS, and as such will output as stereo when using SPDIF.

If you have a soundcard with the proper encoders, you can encode to Dolby/DTS in realtime. Using onboard though, you're limited to stereo for surround signals when using SPDIF.

But yeah, use analog anyway for the Z5500's. Higher quality using the onboards DAC then the Z5500's DAC.
