Please help, card not working when I install drivers

Whats up everyone,

I just reformatted my computer completely. The first thing I tried to do was install the drivers for the video card I'm using from the CD that came with the card. The card is an ATI x800xl that I purchased refurbished from ATI about a year ago.

Right after I reformatted, the display worked fine. But then as soon as I install the drivers and restart the computer, I just get a screen of crazy stuff going on like white boxes with black specs and colors all over the place. Also, when I tried another time I just didn't get any screen at all (screen went black after the "loading windows xp" logo/screen). The Windows XP Pro CD I have is SP1, not SP2. The only thing I could possibly think of is that it's not working because I have not run windows updates, but that doesn't make sense to me. I am also only installing the driver and ati control panel, not the catalyst stuff or any extras. Oh and one last thing, I'm using a Dell 20.1" monitor with a DVI cable.

Please help! P.S. this is on the old computer from my sig, Dimension 8200.

When reformatting, especially with XP (I've noticed), the best route is install XP, then SP2, chipset/motherboard drivers, then start adding things like VGA/sound etc drivers. Remember to add .net 2.0 if you're planning on using CCC. Installing the video drivers straight away, especially with the newer ATi drivers is kind of asking for trouble.
 
Ok, still not working. =(

I reformatted the drive, installed XP Pro again with the card and wirless nic in the box. Once XP was on there I installed drivers for the nic. It worked pretty smoothly and then I went to Windows Update and did all that jazz. Then I went to www.ati.com and installed the latest drivers. Installation prompts me to restart and after I see Windows XP Pro screen, my screen goes black and stays that way. It's *on* (led is green) but the screen is just black.

Please help
 
i would try some older drivers, failing that, try some beta drivers, and failing that, i would go ahead and try some tweaked drivers like the wildcat drivers. who knows, u might get lucky.
 
My guess is your card is dead. The same kind of thing happened to my old comp, it would just suddenly get a black screen on boot with an x800xl. I swapped in an old 9800 pro and that worked fine for a few months, until that also died. After that I popped in an nvidia card and it's been working just fine for a while now.

First, make a new windows install disk, slipstreamed to service pack 2 (google autostreamer), there is no reason for not using it already.

Second, Right after you install windows clean, if windows setup detected the network adapter, load windows update and download every critical update available, if no net access yet, install network adapted driver only, then do the winupdate process.

Once windows is fully patched, install chipset drivers, not the ones included in the motherboard box, but the very latest(download depending motherboard chipset, example intel, via, nvidia, etc), once they are installed, restart windows and then proceed to install videocard and audio drivers.

I know its a tedious process, but trust me, its worth the time invested :D

OldMX, that's basically what I did.

I didn't know about the SP2 thing though. But, I installed Windows, then ONLY the driver for the NIC. Immediately afterwards I did all Windows updates. Then I installed the Graphics card driver after that.

But, about the chipset stuff... yeah... I have been dealing with ATI tech support and they also just suggested that today. It is on a Dell so the first place I went was Dell's website... I found BIOS update (which I already have) but no chipset stuff. I found out that I have an Intel 850E chipset so I went to Intel's site, but couldn't really find any "Chipset Drivers."

Didn't work.. I got a black screen. Green light on monitor, but black screen.
 
Can you force agp 4x @ bios? or use the second connector on videocard to monitor?
 
No I do not have that option. The only video card related options I have are video aperture which is at 128mb and also one to select which is the main video interface which of course I have set to AGP.

I just reformatted again. Then installed wireless card drivers, then full MS update. Did the Intel INF update, flashed BIOS to most recent (again), then installed the new 7.9 drivers for video and same thing again, black screen. =( I tried the 6.12 drivers as well, same result.

Oh and this was also done using a 15" lcd (different monitor) and the VGA out instead of DVI... moved the net card to a different slot before I did it all too. I can't think of anything else to possibly do.

The first time it booted up after driver installation I just had a black screen. Then I restarted and went to safe mode, then shut it down. Then I took out the network card (why not?) and started it back up. Well that didn't seem to do anything but.

Like I said sometimes I get black screens and sometimes I just get a distorted version of the Windows log on screen... which soon will freeze up so I have to hard reset the computer. I managed to get some pics though so I'll post those tonight. There is a third thing that can happen as well when I turn on the PC so if that happens I'll get pics of it too.

Also once I got back into Windows after a freeze I got some info:
