Hello,

I'm setting up a 2GHz Core 2 Duo dedicated folding box, and I have a question.

1) Is it worth it to run the -SMP flag on a Core 2 Duo box? Or should I stick with running two separate instances of the uniprocessor client?

2) The motherboard I'm using has one PCI slot open, and I'm thinking about adding a 430 Fermi GPU. How many PPD can I get with a Fermi 430? Also, can I run both the CPU and the GPU F@H clients at once? Does running the GPU client in essence require a certain amount of CPU capacity?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I understand that a 2GHz Core 2 Duo isn't a huge performer, but every little bit helps, right?

Every bit helps, that is for sure...

I'm not sure if a 2ghz chip will make the deadline on some of the SMP WU, so, stick with the standard client and run 2.

Never run a 430 myself, but I'd figure that it should do about 3-4k ppd.

I think the C2D will do regular SMP, my unlocked sempron 140 @ 2.7 does them, but idk how these two chips compare.

I think you'll be fine with regular SMP. I don't recall the exact ppd, but even on the slow WUs(670x) I was getting a bonus.

I have a 1.8 GHz C2D laptop that makes deadlines on normal SMP WU.....

if that can make it, yours can, fire it up.

2.0GHz should make your deadline, may be by the skin of your teeth, but you should make it.

As for a 430, you should average 3-5k ppd depending on the WU.

Running the CPU and GPU client at the same time is not a problem at all, takes barely and cpu usage at all where the client is really made to tax only your GPU, so you shouldnt get anything above 2% usage from the GPU client where it doesnt call on it. This should no affect your performance for an SMP client in the least.

Good luck folding and welcome to the horde, dont forget to set up your badge too!

I take it your folding name is rockfishbrewery? If so, go here and choose your badge:
