I need to access the data on a drive that runs windows 98. I tried to set the drive as a slave to my computer that runs XP. I can see the drive when I go into my cmos but I can't see the drive when I boot up. Is this because the drives have different OS's? How can I fix this. Also, can I reformat the slave drive?
 
What does the disk management control panel show? Winkey+R, diskmgmt.msc, enter.

 
Does it show partitions on it? Does it show a drive letter assigned to them? What does "chkdsk DRIVELETTER:" show?

 
Yes it is partitioned. But when I do "chkdisk DRIVELETTER" the command prompt seems to appear for a split second and then is gone. Also, the drive is not given a letter it is given a number.
 
Run "cmd" and type the command in there so you'll see any error messages that pop up. It's "chkdsk" with no "i", though. And I meant for you to replace DRIVELETTER with the actual drive letter: "chkdsk D:" or something like that. Also notice there's a colon after the drive letter.

 
In the disk manager it does not show a name where the other disk has a name (c: ). I mean in the "volume" column. It says disk 1 in the graphical view though.

When I ran "cmd" then used the command it says the drive or path is not valid. I typed " "chkdsk 1" then tried "chkdsk disk1" and "chkdsk disk 1"
 
Is there an option to "change drive letters and paths" or something similar if you right-click on the partition in disk mgmt? You'll need to get a drive letter before you can do chkdsk.

 
I tried that and the only options that I can use are "delete partion" and "help", the others are dimmed and I can't select them.
 
What is the subtext on the partition? For example, for my C: drive:

80.00 GB NTFS
Healthy (System)

Yours might be something like:
24.35 GB FAT32
Something (something Else)
or:
24.35 GB
Healthy (Unknown Partition)

If it's the second, you're going to have to look into a data recovery utility.

 
I have the same problem down to a t. This is a secondary drive that used to work on another computer and now doesn't. The drive shows up okay everywhere but I just can't assign it a drive letter. When I right click the drive box and look at options, everything is greyed out except for "Delete Partition" and "Help." I obviously don't want to delete the partition because there is data there. Any ideas?

Here is what shows up in the bottom half for this drive (Disk 1) in Disk Management:

New Volume
111.7 GB NTSF
Healthy (Active)
 
No one has any ideas?

The only option I seem to have is try converting it to a dynamic disk and see if that makes it work. I've read on this board though that dynamic disks in general aren't a good idea unless you need the features for RAID etc.
 
Well we've tried a lot of things, re-arranging pins, re-wiring etc. We are afraid to change it to dynamic disk for fear of it reformatting or losing the data. The only thing I have left to try is to use one of those utilities off UBCD to try rewriting a partition table or something.

Anyone had a similar problem and solved it?
