As with most, I am aware that Intel has the market on the best home processors at the moment. Being a total noob at this sort of thing and looking at replacing my desktop in the next couple of months I was wondering if someone could explain why intel has the upper hand at the moment and explain what the oohs and ahs are about the specs and benchmarks on processors. Being relatively new to this could someone also explain what the specs mean? Thank you for your help, I know its probably a seeming dumb set of questions.:(

if it helps any
id like to compare http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103749 the windsor
and the conroe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115003

Explaining what the specs mean could take a while, for someone who's not at home in the world of silicon and software.
Besides, at best it's 'circumstatial evidence' of the performance.
Think of it as the specs of a car.
If you know the displacement of the engine, and its maximum bhp, you'll have some idea of what kind of performance to expect... but a lot of it still depends on other factors such as how heavy it is, how aerodynamic, how well it corners etc.
There's really no way to say which car is faster just based on the spec sheet.
Same with CPUs. C2D is just faster because it's a better processor overall. Even though the Athlon's specs are more impressive at first sight.

Core 2 Duos are faster, uses less power, and runs cooler than AMD 64 X2 processors. They are also more expensive and the C2D boards are expensive too.

C2D is about 20-35% faster than an X2 at the same clockspeed.

A 2ghz Conroe will outperform a 2ghz A64 X2, while using a bit less power.

First the E6600 is closer in performance to the FX-62 or its X5xxx and Opteron Equivalents. So it is a lot Cheaper. Then it runs cooler, almost 3 X the cache, uses less power, has Cheap mobos as well, overclocks better, and one of the best deals in the computer market in years.

This is the one you *maybe should have compared.

Everything above would apply for this one as well. :)
