Hi lads,

with the F@H client coming to the ATi x19x0 cards exclusively, I am considering to switch from my 7900GT (530/800) to an ATi card. What is important for me is that I do not lose performance, i.e. FPS, especially in CS:S. My current GT is watercooled and my block ought to fid an ATi card as well.

Given my current clockspeed, I would assume that my performance is close to the 7900GTX in Anand's article. By looking at that, I am under the impression that if I were to get a x1900XT 256MB, I would be downgrading more than anything else. Is that impression correct? Should I be looking for a 512MB card exclusively? I usually try to play games, so that they will work along with vsync on my LCD, i.e. min framerate ~60 fps.

Your input is greatly appreciated.
 
the X1900XT 256meg is faster then a 7900GT by a decent amount, so I'd say its pretty close to a 7900GTX where as the GTX should be ahead in more games, but you can also OC the XT and the XT 512m is only a bit more then the 256 I'd say go for the 512
 
I'm guessing your 7900gt is 256mb, anyways you'd want to be looking for at least x1900xt 512mb to see some noticeable speed gains :)

Anyways I have no idea what the F@H client actually allows you to do and its benefits anyone care to fill me in?

I had seen that the xt 256 was a bit slower in HL2:Ep1 than a GTX according to Anandtech. My overclocked 7900GT should come "close" to a stock GTX in performance.

So you would suggest to spring for the extra 512MB ram?

ok, I was thinking that it would make a lot of sense to go for the 512MB version. checking out the FS/FT section, i am alsmost considering to get a used XTX.

The GPU version of the F@H client allows me to produce more points/ wus than just folding on the cpu alone.

Folding@Home is a program created by the Stanford University to help analyze the structuring and restructuring of proteins for desease and medical research. It takes HUGE amounts of processing power to analyze just 1 nanosecond of the biological process. F@H outsources bits of data to PC's around the world in a "supercomputer cluster" style setup. Boils down to some like it would take a single 3ghz PC around 1day to calculate 1 nanosecond and about 3000 years to calculate just 1 full second of Biological process time. I think there are around 250,000 PC's around the world at the moment on the F@H cluster network crunching numbers.

The calculations are all deal with crunching floating point numbers. And we should all know that GPU's crunch floating point numbers way better than CPU's. The new F@H client will now be able to access the ATi GPU's and use the GPU along with the CPU to crunch numbers.

I think a Core Duo crunches floating point at about 35 to 40 GFLOPS. In comparison, a ATi X1900 series card crunches at about 350 to 375 GFLOPS.
 
Another question: I have looked at the xbitlabs image quality comparison between ATi and nVidia card. From my perspective, it appears that the wire-mesh fences in HL2 disappear on ATi card, when they are almost in plane with the characters view. Is this really the case?

on the left hand side image, it appears that there is no fence, on the right hand side image, it is clearly visible.
 
I think its just a bad frame, i didnt have that problem on my xtx

well, I looked at their videos and even in them, it appears that the fence is not visible.

I'm not looking at the X-Bit article, but this is a semi-known issue. It depends on what settings are being used on the card. In general, ATi cards have some slight issues when it comes to their RGMS methods on very thin, fine surfaces, but it's not much of a big deal. It's a fairly nit-picky thing that won't be noticed in the majority of scenarios unless you're really focusing on it.
