Please understand that price is a MONSTER obstical. The two chips come in at 129$ for the celeron and 124$ for the p4, so it's not that huge an obstical. (newegg.com)

while i'm at it, i was going to include a couple mushkin 512 DDR 3200 and this motherboard:

I would appreciate any advice. I think I'm making a good choice. I know the MB is a little more than i would need in FSB cap and HT, but i figure that'll give me a quick cheep upgrade in about a year.

Thanks in advance,

I read your first sentence and it said celeron, I'm going to be like everyone else at this message board and tell you that Celerons are a really bad idea. And not just a 2.8 or anything just ANY celeron at all. Even if they do provide modest performance, you will get know respect at all with a celeron in your box especially one that you have built yourself.

I would hands down recomend a 2.4 pentium 4 over a celeron. But, if your the type of man that needs his processor to be a budget chip than your going to need to familiarize yourself a little bit with the Athlon XPs.

Well the new prescott celerons arent that bad at all, they're up there with Athlon XP's, but because they're the same price, that p4 would be alot better.

this is where i'm confused. I see that the p4 has a crapload more L2 cash, and i figure that more than makes up for the slightly slower chip. same core, both have the heat sink and fan... why is the celeron 5 bucks more expensive?

ps: i have amd now, but amd runs hot. I know it sounds stupid, but if i can spend 35 extra bucks to cut the heat i put out by half, i'll spend the money. when we are talking global warming, every little bit helps. I'm still going to heat my house by burning wood, though, so go figgure.

Marketing, the celery has a bigger number.

Definitely go with the Prescott 2.4 and overclock the shit out of it.

The new 256KB Celerons aren't bad performers at all. However, the 2.4A looks like a decent overclocker and the big cache is pretty important with the Prescott core. Get the 2.4A.

Well if you're looking for a cool chip, I dont think prescott is for you. Prescotts are the hottest CPU's on the market. I'd say the coolest [reasonably powerful] chips are the athlon 64's. Anyone have anything to add?

The 2.4a and 2.8a prescotts run ALOT cooler than the E versions of the prescott. ;)

get a mobile amd.... they don't run hot at all... mine never gets over 45 celcius.. and my cpu fan is usually at 1700 rpm.. but kicks up to 2200 or something like that when i am over 40 degrees...

right now i am running 166 x 8 @ 1.26v ... the cpu is 38 and the board is 36... (but i am just playing around) i normally run it at 2.4ish ghz...

prescotts are hot on the other hand... but they do throttle down if they overheat... where an amd will burn up... (this only really can happen if all overtemp shutdowns are disabled in bios though)
