I'm not if anyone else has read about this recently but I saw an article today that mentioned that Sony is seeking to charge for services of some sort for the PSN network. Frankly, this infuriates me as this was one of the reasons why I chose to get the PS3 over the Xbox360.

Has anyone else read or heard anything about this? My source was:

What're your opinions?

Online play will be free still. Sony has been looking into adding premium type of service to the PSN. There was a leaked survey that showed some of the ideas they had potentially. Do a search on the forums.

Far as am concerned as long as online play is free then I don't care, and they have stated online play will stay free.

The one thing I don't get about this... if they're charging for cross game chat, does that mean that you'll only be able to use it with others who have paid for it?

woa... didnt think about this one... it will fail if its like that

That actually is a good point. I hope features like that won't be charged for. It is normal on Xbox Live (I understand you pay for them) but for anyone who doesn't have those features, it will be a big disadvantage for them. Basically will cause them to end up paying for the features, which works out for Sony, but not so much for the consumer.

I think they are just trying to find and market a "gold membership" similar to what Microsoft has, although I think you get more out of a regular account on the PSN, than what you get out of a silver membership on XBL. As long as online multiplayer remains free, then I don't care. Having a multi tiered subscriber option could be good for those people who want a little bit more.

Personally I think both networks need to offer more for free than what you're actually getting. Basically XBL and PSN feel like a platform meant to sell you stuff, and to boot you get to pay $300 for a company to stick their online catalogue in your face, and then they want to charge you for extra services? They should offer more of the services for free to get their sales platform always at your fingertips.

I think its a premium service, while online play will be free. I hope Live takes this model sooner than later.

of course cross game chat would only work between people who paid for it, since you need to pay for it to use it?

i assume by cross game we mean cross platform? or you just mean in game chatting.

Cross game chat. Talking with someone who is not playing the same game you are.

Or in the case of the XBL example, up to 8 people.

which 90% of us probably use, never.

I dont care if they want to charge for extras personally. As long as online is free, im all for them making a buck to keep new services coming. If they arent offering it now and they offer it later for a charge, whats the big deal? Al a carte service is much nicer than all or nothing. Wont see me complaining.

You don't use it? Why on earth not? It's awesome.

Nothing like having a bunch of friends online chatting whilst you're playing some games, or waiting for your team to turn up for a bit of multiplayer.

If Sony make XGC a premium feature they are fuckin insane. Sure, as a business decision making ppl pay for the feature they have been shouting for for the last X amount of years sounds like a cunning plan but this will severely piss ppl off. The ability to talk to someone else via your console should be a basic function in todays multimedia machines, you don't release a castrated version and then fuck your entire userbase over when you 'fix' it. If Sony are gonna go for this premium service then so be it, but give some premium content (and with an entire back catalogue of PSOne and possible PS2 games that is surely somewhere to start), don't make us pay for what we should have had since Nov'06

I figured it was only a matter of time. I know Sony started charging publishers money for each of their demos that were served up through the PSN (per gigabyte), so it was only a matter of time before they started charging users for PSN access.

usually im chatting with my clan or group before my matches, never saw much use for just hanging out to chat with friends. I use irc for that. But i dont really just hang on my PS3 in that fashion anyway i suppose usually its on for a single purpose, then off when im done. Plus wife always bitches im too loud after the kid is down for the night =D

People crying about having to pay for a feature that is not yet available, and is only a luxury. I've seen it all.

although i want xgc i cant see myself using it all the time like others do. on most occasions ill be talking to the wife or my kid between matches and when im in a match ill be speaking to the players im playing with. id only use xgc when im playing a single player game or someone wants to know what im playing and join my session. if they did xgc witj unlimited psn movie rentals (or some other very enticing offer) id pay a monthly subscription. otherwise i can live without it as its not essential for me.

People will always complain about something they think they should get for free or otherwise :)

people always complain about something, yet often fail to think about what may be required to allow said users those features, it costs someone, somewhere, money to create the features and then maintain them.

Are you assuming you're going to lose something? There is still going to be free PSN with all of the same stuff you normally get. They just are also going to offer premium content. So what?

my thought is:

I bought the PS3 over the Xbox360 because...

1) Blu-Ray

2) didnt have to pay for everything you do on it, in order to pick up the controller you have to have a XboxLive account for $x a month

so if PS3 charges me for anything I will simply sell the damn thing, the minute it asks for my money

even if we stay with the same ''product'' but there is a possibility of premium content for paying customer?

I kinda agree with this which is why I stated what I stated earlier. Features like Cross Game Chatting shouldn't be something that needs to be "paid" for. The console + the games themself cost so much already. Microsoft introduced it from the start, for Sony to come late into the game and expect people to pay for features such as this, I think it's just unfair.
