Playstation 3 to use nvidia graphics?

Not suprised....R500 style gfx core is in Xbox 2 if i'm not mistaken....and there is also an ATI card in the 'cube.....if there was one in the PS3 then Nvidia would be on the way out.....

I'm just amazed that sony didn't design their own chip. And that, after all their problems with M$ and the Xbox1, nvidia still went the console route...

Just curious. What problems did they have?

Like, as sales started to slow after the initial rush M$ put a lot of pressure on nvidia to lower the cost of the chips...and I think they actually went to court over it but I'm not sure...

Basically M$ signed an agreement to buy chips from them at X price, and then tried to renegotiate mid-stream when things didn't go their way...

I believe the problem was M$ signed an agreement that would not accomodate the drop in price for the chips and as such even after a year was paying much more then they should have been. THat is why M$ tried to renegotiate the contract they signed.

I think it'd be easier/cheaper to team up with an established gpu company, problems there may be, but can u imagine the cost and timescale of beginning from scratch on a new gpu? Not feasable on the timescale Sony wants, especially if that article is true and we will see PS3's next year

Plus the talk of royalties isn't to be sniffed at...it makes sense, ATI are the oem choice AND gpu for Xbox 2, not much left for Nvidia really so they really had to take it.

Lets not forget the source! Although it would be funny if NV did it just because ATI got Xbox2 and Gamecube.

nVidia chips in the PS3?

This is surely excellent news for everyone as it will doubtless mean that the new nVidia cards are a thousand times more powerful than the PS2.

I thought nVidia lost quite a lot of money on the Xbox which is why they didn't bother fighting ATi for the contract for the Xbox 2. nVidia might have learnt from that mistake don't you think? Also the Playstation is the biggest console in terms of market share, so by having their cards in that they are pretty much guaranteeing huge numbers of sales, much more so than ATi with the Xbox 2.

I'm not really bothered anyway, I don't play consoles, it's the low resolution that I don't like!

Yeah I just want a console that will run at 1600x1200 and have a vga out...is that too much to ask?

:)

I like my PS2 too! Stop knockin' it! ;)

*grumbling* low res my ass *grumbling* looks good still *grumble*

Good move on nvidia. I know I'd likely get a PS3 just because of backwards compatiblity. (2 generations now)

hmm...backwards compatibility...I hadn't thought of that...but with the horsepower that system will have...they can likely just build in a software emulator and it would still work...I'm super curious to see the specs on the two machines...

Backwards compatibility shouldn't be much of a problem me thinks with the kind of hardware thats been talked about going inside the PS3 but remember that orginally the PS2 wasn't going to be backwards compatibility with PS1 games, they just happened to share a few chips that made it possible. PS3 will be using Blue Ray DVDs if memory serves me right so hopefully we'll atleast see PS2 compatibility with it.

Anyone else see a pattern? G5 CPU and now graphics from NV. ;) Sony will probably use another Linux varient for the OS again. .

The ps3 is going with the cell processor not a G5

Duh how could I have forgotten that! It's the XBox2 that uses one.
That's going to be strange... embedded Win2K or WinXP for PPC.

NVIDIA made a ton of money off the deal initially. I posted a ton of stories about the revenue they made from the sale of Xbox GPUs. It was the infighting and the lawsuits that kept them from working together the second time around. Funny how lawsuits tend to sour a relationship ;)

MS has owned the company that makes the Windows emulators for OS X for awhile now, I'm sure that with resources like that they can come up with something. :)

Yeah, but they're not going to run native Xbox2 OS or games in emulation. It will be native. And MS isn't going to run a non-Windows OS on the Xbox2.

Xbox 1 compatibility will probably be emulated though.

?? Ok you lost me. Is PS3 not going to be compatible with PS2 and 1? I would hope so. I wouldn't mind see a boost to PS1 games too (Think how Bleem did for dreamcast or bleem/any ps1 emulator makes the older games at higher res with AA)

*obviously I haven't read anything on PS3 and I'm just assuming things at this point*

awesome :) heres hoping the use more than 4mb of vram! maybe we can expect 8 this time!

all bashing aside, im excited about it and i really hope that is backwards compatable with the ps2 games cause my ps2 is on its last leg and i really dont want to pay for repairs or buy a new one.. also, its possible that iwth hte more powerful hardware in the ps3 (and hopefully at least 128mb vram, though i wouldnt hold my breath) they could apply some freakin AA cause those graphics are startin to look real bad... GTA:SA being a prime example, the jaggies and stuff in that game really annoy me..

Who knows at this point? They could be moving to an OpenGL format for the games (current Xbox games are in a format similar to DX) which would make that possible but yeah they'd the "old" stuff as an emu.

i HIGHLY doubt the XBOX2 will be using OpenGL, microsoft writes DX for heavens sake

...and theyre using R500.. if the current generation shows us anything, its that ATI is better at DX than they are at OpenGL.

It was rhetorical, notice I prefaced with "who knows." All I am saying is that either they have a Windows version that is compatable with PPC chips or they make it alittle easy on themselves and move to some sort of OpenGL like format. Just think how hard it'll be to rework DX libraries to work on a PPC chip.

Wasn't there something about PS3s being at E3 this year?

you have a point, i didnt think of the PPC... lets hope the R500 kicks ass at OpenGL

ill have to agree now, who knows?
cool.gif

edit: then again, dont there exist ( i know there are ones for linux) that allow dx9 games to run on a mac? or no?

i believe that si one fo the reasons microsoft created XNA. to allow developing of games a lot simpler.

and i thought that the Cell chip was going to handle everything on the ps3?

Jeez...all this talk of PS3 and I cant even get ahold of the new PSTwo..lol.

speaking of the new ps2 .. i wonder how big the ps3 is gonna be ... is it gonna be as big as the orig. ps2 or bigger ... or did they learn something new after making the ps2 smaller ...

lol, hopefully Sony doesn't want any of the 6800Ultra EEs GPUs in the PS3. Nvidia would be in some major trouble trying to get that many produced! j/k of course :D

Less trouble then ATI would be trying to come up with enough X800XT Phantom Editions for the Xbox 2 lol.

This is a big win for nVidia considering the Playstation 2 outsold Xbox and Gamecube combined. Sony has a huge market and this will really boost nVidia's revenue.

I hear nVidia's stock is up 15% today as well.

PS3 is looking better already. :p

This is totally awesome news. Now I'm gonna have get a PS3 and an XBox 2. Couple those
with PC upgrade a year later and LANS are gonna be so be mixed with console and pc games.

Now if only these companies would make games where PC and Consoles would play eachother.
Quake 3 on the Dreamcast was totally killer for that reason.

What cancellation? The same cancellation that theinq said about the NV45 (coming out next week)? LOL

news flash: theinquirer is not a reliable news source.
