Playing Videos from RAM

To start, I already have a RAMdisk program (RAMDisk Plus).

Now, would there be a significant power savings by creating a RAMDisk and playing videos from it vs. the hard drive on a laptop? Would I also have to install the video player on the RAMDisk? Basically, I'm trying to avoid any disk hits and let the hard drive spin down while the video is playing.

Is the whole effort worth it?

Honestly, not by much. Hard drives on a whole don't use that much power to remain spun up. You're talking the most miniscule of savings ever on power consumption, unless your electric company is exhorbitantly overcharging you, in which case you shouldn't even be able to afford using a computer if a HDD's power consumption is noticeable.

If power usage is your biggest concern, and you have a bit of money, get an SSD?

Okay so it wouldn't have a noticeable impact on battery life. I'll just use my other computer for watching in-flight movies then. (XPS 1640 has no battery life--less than 1.5 hours vs. my company issued machine with its 9-cell battery which can play movies for at least 4 hours). I was hoping I could watch movies on the larger screen by saving some power but it appears to not be worth it.

Thanks!

Yeah Dell XPS laptops are horrible when it comes to battery life. Most of it's due to the fact you can't manually control the cpu/gpu clock/power consumption like you can on a desktop. Only devices I've found satisfactory for viewing videos on flights are tablets, smart phones, and media devices like the cowon or archos.
