Im currently playing sound for my ps3 through my computer's audio in jack, and it plays stereo sound out of my 5.1 system that is hooked up to the pc.

My question is, is there anyway to hook the ps3 to the computer so that it will actually use the 5.1 speakers properly? Can a card with an optical in translate the audio data without tons of lag?

From what i understand the optical signal is only 2 channels, but how does it work when i hook it into my home theater receiver?

What kind of sound card do you have?

If your PC has optical in and out then you should be able to send a 5.1 signal into it and get 5.1 out of it. You might need to play around with settings in your audio card's software "control panel".

Optical can send 2 channels if its PCM (think 16 bit/44.1 KHz CD quality).

But it'll do 5.1 (or more) if compressed to Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS.

What soundcard (if any) do you have in the computer? What speakers are you using?

right now its the integrated audio of my p6t, im running a headphone jack into the audio in of the sound card, and i have a set of Logitech Z-5300e speakers.

What is a good soundcard for for what i want to do? + plus regular pc gaming?
