Playing guitar through my speakers

I'm going to be buying an electric guitar.

I have a nice and loud speakers + reciever system that I would like to use to amp my guitar.

From what I understand, just straight adapting the 1/4" into red/white RCA's and plug those into my receiver inputs wouldn't quite work right.

So what I'm asking, would plugging in my guitar into a cheap 50 dollar Behringer mixer and then putting a cable from the headphone out on the mixer into my receiver work?

In short: Guitar 1/4" ----> Mixer input (also 1/4") ------> Headphone out (red/white RCA) ------> Receiver inputs (also red/white RCA)

Does that sound like a solution to what I want to acheive?

Thanks.

yes that will work... BUT DONT USE THE HEADPHONE OUT... that would be wasting the board... on the UB series of boards all of them have a main output... use that as your output instead of the headphone... there will be an individual L R output... so you wont need the adapter cable... this will work just fine... just dont expect the guitar to sound as great as the music that you listen to.... http://www.allprosound.com/catalog/productdetails.asp?fprodid=341&item=Behringer - UB502

Care to elaborate on what kind of program I could use?

So all I would need for this would be a 1/4" ----> 1/8" adapter and a program?

You will need a host program like MiniHost. From your host program you will be able to open VST Plugins. These are sound plugins that are instruments and effects. You could use Free Amp SE or other distortion/amp effects which can be found at KVR Audio.

Actually I'd get that Behringer Preamp Footer4321 linked. So it would go something like:

Guitar > Preamp > Soundcard Line In > Host Program > VST Plugin > Soundcard Out > Receiver

i would go with the mixer if you want comprable sound comared to an amp... going direct in and using your computer as a preamp will not sound that great....

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with you.

But the software idea was cool...but not for me.

So it looks like I'll be getting the mixer and be on my way! Thanks.
