Playing Games Using Multi-Touch

You would literally have to clean your screen after every game--or anything for that matter. PASS!!!

To anyone that thinks this is the future is an idiot....

bull. my iphone screen does get dirty during gaming, but i can still clearly see what I'm hitting, so theres no need to keep it squeaky clean. use glass and a bright screen.

I can only imagine the case of gorilla arm you would get after playing like that for a few hours.

I wouldn't mind a touchscreen in my coffee table or couch to control my media center, but this sort of thing isn't practical. I'll keep my mouse and keyboard.

Only MMO I could see this working for is EVE. It would be really awesome for RTS but there will always be a use for the keyboard and mouse.

The koreans are heavily investing in this to bolster the already formidable zerg rush.

cool, just as most suggests it would be really wicked for RTS games, as the wheel is for racing games and such, but it would still be dependent on the developer on how well he implements this (be it games or anything else), I dont think multi-touch is over rated, finger prints? just clean your screen, I doubt fingerprints will be the downfall of this technology, if something as simple as that would bring it down, then the mice we had before that used rubber balls would have suffered the same fate to lint, is it me or people are really getting lazy nowadays

I remember when the Wii was supposed to be the future of FPS, we all seen how that turned out.

Its good, but not for gaming. RTS would be the only app you could use it on, and why would you pay XXX dollars for a nice big screen and then EVERY time you issue a command, you have to cover up XX% of the screen to do it. That would be a lot of time with at least something not visible. Call me stupid, but thats a waste of space/money. Plus, you can cover any decent sized monitor side to side with a high sensitivity mouse MUCH faster than you could move your whole arm. And since the argument is you could issue multiple commands, it that were true, you could only do a whole 2 commands at a time. You can tab threw grouped units and give commands much faster than any touch screen method

just my .02$

Might have to invest in this new technology to be Ready for the new Starcraft whenever it launches. The Koreans are going to be ready, we should be too.

That looks like it would be a lot of fun, but with my OCDness I would cry if someone came over to my monitor and started smudging oily finger prints all over it and pounding on it with their fists...

anybody who uses (or thinks they would use) a touch screen with their bare hands is an idiot
simply put something over your fingers like a pad and fingerprint issue is solved, much like people who handle money or paper all day

the average forum IQ went down several points from the replies in this thread

sheesh, people

and where is the fuckin edit button?

heh, imagine a touch screen version of Starcraft. Now imagin the Koreans using it ;)

Personally, I only see this as a viable technology for board games / slower paced games. RTS just moves too fast... I mean he's struggling with the screen and theres only a few characters on the screen... granted he's struggling partly because the technology is still in it's infancy.. but even if it was matured (no "missed clicks" as you see him repeatedly do the same actions over and over because it's not reading properly his actions) I still think it wouldn't be very good. Good luck trying to play a game like supreme commander on something like this, where you can control hundreds of units simultaneously.

It would be AWESOME for board game replacement though. Just imagine having a screen you put on your table that can hold every board game in existence. Don't feel like monopoly? Jump on the "board game marketplace" and download a new game, and viola you've got your game. Would make having cards difficulty, but some "low tech" cardboard you could place on top of the screen to prevent others from seeing your cards would do the trick.

These new tech touchscreens don't work by pressure, they work by other methods so, as soon as you cover the skin on your finger, you effectively negate their ability to detect the fact that you're even touching the screen at all. In other words, your solution is useless.

Why do I get the distinct impression that a huge gigantic proportion of people commenting on this stuff, this new touchscreen technology, haven't even tried it or had a chance to get "hands on" experience? Because some comments lead me to believe they're thinking this is old school pressure based stuff like PDAs and some Tablet PCs that require pressure to work or a stylus pen.

These are nothing like those... and work purely by contact with the skin... far far more efficient.

And the fingerprint thing, my god... get over it people, it's nowhere near as "bad" or noticeable as you might think. Go to a local store like Best Buy or whatever (was gonna say Circuit City almost, but they dug their own hole) and try out the HP TouchSmart machines, you might be surprised. But then again, it sounds like most have their minds made up before they even use one, who knows.

What's the old saying... "Assumptions are the mother of all fuckups..."

Uh, assuming a game built around it with gesture recognition as a main feature you wouldn't run into these issues. Also a game like Supreme Commander would be easier. What is more useful when controlling many units, one cursor or five? Five, you just have to know how to use them and be quick enough. RTS really is the perfect match for this input technology.

This + starcraft2 + Koreans = noone stands a chance.

So are you assuming, or have factual evidence, that there is absolutely nothing you could put over your fingertips that would protect it from fingerprints, but still register a "touch" on the screen? lol

It doesn't sound like you know what you are talking about. Your post is useless, and nothing but a troll. nice try

looks to be a good shoulder/arm workout. there'd be some disproportional gamers with large arms.

Your right and your wrong. While not all touch screens require pressure. I have an ipod touch and a G1 I don't think the tech is too different from those two items. My job requires me to wear rubber gloves from time to time. Both ipod touch and the G1 screens work with rubber gloves on. Also work with cotton gloves I wear in the winter.

Whether or not someone wants to wear gloves and play I have no idea.

now i cant wait to use a screen like this in counter strike. Nothing like clicking right away at the targets head :)

Pretty nifty. I wonder though if you can have touchscreens identify your fingerprints. That way you can assign your middle finger to do X action and pointer to do Y action and so forth. That way you wont have to pound on the screen like the guy did to get them to attack =p just touch with right middle finger.

want them to move and not attack? touch with right pointer. I definitely can see this being faster than a mouse with some tweaks and using both hands.

Big fat fucking MEH.

Give me a mouse set at high sensitivity. Moving a mouse with tiny wrist movements and some keyboard shortcuts beats waving your arms and dragging your fingers around a bigass screen any day.

I'd have to try out the multi-touch for a while but I still say keyboard shortcuts are better for this type of game.

whoever said 5 cursors beats one, you can only move those 5 cursors together and they are just a few inches apart at most, so fail. Plus, while trying to use all 10 of your "cursors" how much of the screen do you cover? THe outline of 2 hands plus the arms that hold them.

Here is a little test. Put both hands out in front of you just off the screen (like your getting frisked). Then, wave around like you are at a rave (but not so fast you can see threw them, just as fast as you would be dragging things on screen with). Now, try to read the conversation in this thread while doing that. This just simulates how much you cant see and how much you can that is constantly getting covered. Granted, some of you might be able to read, but thats because the text is stationary. If you could read, imagine if all the words were bouncing around and doing this and that ( like a RTS battle ). Sorry, to inefficient.

LOL - That was my first though during the first couple seconds.

That was a niffty video. I would almost start playing RTSs again if that became standard. It would be cool to see what the DEVs come up with building a RTS around a TouchScreen, like different taps and slide combos. Interesting stuff.

That's a good argument. Plus the other argument on the stress your arms would have to go through.

I also wanted to mention that a roughly fair example of a good touch screen RTS game setup would be two screens, one screen for all the commands so your arms wouldn't get tired and then another screen to view what your doing. What's so funny about that is, in almost every aspect, it sounds very similar to the setup we already have now: The keyboard and mouse!

As soon as monitors catch up with the technology (ala not flat screens but project images) and displays move into 3d space (4d i guess if u count time), this will be the way we handle interaction with computers.

I mean look how they did it in Iron Man when he was designing his suit. Do that with a mouse. =p

Even if there were special gloves you could wear that just gives me another reason to avoid the product.

Not only will your arm feel like its about to fall off after using the screen for an hour, your hands will be hot and sweaty from having to wear gloves. Awesome
