Hi [H], so I just got done cleaning some nasty stuff off my old man's PC. He followed links to try to find codecs or a media player to play his old .flv files and caught a light case of herpes.

He's determined to play these videos. Can you guys point me in the right direction here? I just figured he could find the videos in a more current format, but he's determined to play the videos he has.

He's been unwell lately. I'm hoping to find a way to enable even a small thing to cheer him up and help find some normalcy for him.

Since we're on the topic am I a noob for still using K-Lite codec pack? It comes with MPC-HC and then I use VLC, too.

Codecs are still very elusive to me. All anyone really does to explain mkv and stuff is "oh that's just a container, duh." As if containers are some ultra common thing.

K-lite codec pack + mpc has a better ui and runs smoother than vlc imo.

Thanks fellas, I'll try both out. Can always count on [H] in a pinch. I appreciate you guys!

MPC-BE (or MPC-HC but it's discontinued) + LAV + madVR when it comes to video. Stay away from codec packs.

I've used MPC-HC for a while and don't have a codec pack installed, all of that stuff appears to be built-in.

Thanks. I only today checked for updates on MPC-HC and saw that it was apparently discontinued. I'll look into "BE".

VLC on Linux, MPC-HC/BE on Windows.

I liked using MPC for the configurable GPU shaders (right click on the video, shaders). Denoise can drastically improve lower-res content in my experience. Other people like to use them for color correction or for sharpening. You need a decent GPU.

Free mediaplayers and codec packs are one of the most common sources of malware on Windows so be careful what you load and where you load from.

And also undeed crap that messes up playback a lot of the time...no need to for a codec-pack today, a good player (like eg. VLC) has them buildt in.

Supported formats in VLC with NO codec-packs:
https://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

.flv being one of them

Man, codec packs are still around in 2018?

Yup, that's why I had to clean up PC herpes. Haven't had a chance to muck with it again, but hopefully it'll work so I don't have to get medieval again.

Just try VLC...it should work...no malware and no crappy codec-packs required.

Been a little over a week now. Old man has been using VLC without a hitch. Was bumpy at first because of the newness, all good now.

No herpes reoccurrences so far.

Thanks ya'll!
