I have about $160-180 bucks for a new card to try and play some Doom 3 - can someone recommend a decent card to play the game? I know I wont have all the features up full blast but I would still like to run the game if possible.

I was looking at the ATI 9600XT for about $159 at new egg.

Thanks for any info - you think will be a better buy :)

I'd wait for the new benchmarks to show up here. If you check the gaming section of the forum, Kyle said they will have new benchmarks up most likely later in the week.

As of now though, if you can scrape another $20 a 9800pro is a much better buy.

for $159, I'm sure that a 5900XT or 5900NU could be found at the FS/FT forums here as well.

For the price you named, it's definitely worth it to avoid any card without a 256 bit memory bus (well, a 5800 or 5800U would do, but they're kinda hard to find)...

I quote truth. The 9600XT is decent, but 9800pro is a hell of a lot better.

EDIT: Ahh, I see you run Linux. ATI's Linux drivers truely suck, so if you plan on running Linux, get an NVidia card.

I'd go for this if you could save a bit more:
http://www.gameve.com/gve/store/ProductDetails.aspx?sku=vc-msi-0061

MSI 6800nu 128mb $284

It comes with full Myst Uru, XIII, and Prince of Persia. Buying those would add up to $70, making the card more like $214 without the games, not bad for a card that can beat the 9800xt hands down, plus the other software MSI comes with, a total of 14 cds.

Scroll down on the link to see all the bundle. Plus the card has 12pipes and sm3.0, making it more future proof than a 9800 card with only 8pipes.

Otherwise a 9800pro would be the best choice at $180, make sure it has 256bit memory, which has nothing to do with the amount of ram, so a 128mb version still has 256bit.

Check when they get this BBA 9800 pro back instock for $169:

Yeah, I run linux but this is for my kid brother and he runs Windows - I would never run ATI n a linux machine :D

I'll look at the 9800 Pro

edit:, check my post above, I edited it a bit with a 9800pro link
Good deal, awesome card, at a great store. I ordered some ram from them, and got overnight shipping via DHL for like $5. Got it the next morning. Cheapest and best shipping evar!
