What about the 7970?
I can think of at least 5-7 games that I own that will bring my 7970 OC'd almost to its knees gaming at 1920x1200 maxed everything.

since I have a 6970 I was thinking, the logical thing was going to buy a 7970...

That's not logical at all, actually that's more like fanboyism
GTX 670 is clearly the best buy out there at the moment. Compared to the 7970 it's cheaper, performs around the same, runs cooler, uses less power, has adaptive vsync, overclocks almost as well and has better driver support.
I have dual 5850s in Crossfire getting 7.3k 3dmark11. I upgraded to a 670 GTX SC and I love this card. It gets 9k 3dmark11 as a single card. I wanted to get rid of microstutter and get a fast single card solution for games that don't really support SLI/Crossfire.
As for going from a 6970 to a 7970 or 680GTX, I'm not sure if you will notice much of a difference. But I will say this. You will get the most money for your old card now on ebay to use for the new card. I sold both my old cards for $240 to use towards my shiny new GTX 670.
As for adaptive sync and FXAA. I think FXAA kinda of blurs the text too much so I don't use it. Not sure what adaptive sync actually does.
With NVIDIA's new Release 300 drivers, we are introducing a new option in the control panel called Adaptive V-Sync. Adaptive V-Sync combines the benefit of V-Sync while minimizing its downside. With Adaptive V-Sync, V-Sync is enabled only when the framerate exceeds the refresh rate of the monitor. When the framerate drops below this rate, V-Sync is automatically disabled, minimizing stuttering in games.
Adaptive V-Sync dynamically turns V-Sync on and off to maintain a more stable framerate.
By dynamically switching V-Sync on and off based on in-game performance, Adaptive V-Sync makes V-Sync a much more attractive option, especially for gamers who put a high premium on smooth framerates.
I have a GTX580 and I can't play a few games maxed out at 1200p.
