i went to my local bestbuy to check out the 360 they had setup. tried kameo, didnt impress me at all. king kong, was ok looking. then i fired up call of duty 2. the game was getting good frame rates, and looked just like it does on my pc. the texure quality is a little lower, tho and there was some aliasing, but you could tell that it was a lot better then what we had with xbox1.

so im playing along in cod2, and out of nowhere the game LOCKS UP AND CRASHES!!!! lol the whole screen truned a purpleish color and the system had to be reset to get it to work again. one of the sales kids ran over really fast and told me that its been doing that all day. baically because they have it in this plexi glass case that has almost no ventelation ... totally makes sense, but i think microsft designed all those display cases, so they should have thought it out a little better.

nice...whoever designed those kiosks needs to get a dumbslap. how could you not figure ventilation into the design?

I thought that thing was watercooled, and could therefore take a little heat. Guess not?

Typical POP (Point of Purchase) displays are not made by companies like Microsoft, these are often sub-contracted to industrial Design studios. How do I know this? my Industrial Design teacher worked at an I.D. studio which did all the POP displays for the XBOX at the E3 two years ago.

i heard that king kong was a very visually impressive game that you had to see to believe, as a friend of mine played it.

umm thats what was advertised a while back

I believe it was advertised as "liquid cooled", and has since been cleary explained to be nothing more then a heat pipe, with Mercury (I believe) as the liquid. This form of cooling only apples to the CPU itself.

LOL! This thread delivers. A+++ Would definitely read again.

Mercury is incredibly toxic - there's no way they would use it in a heat pipe in a consumer device. They don't even use mercury in thermostats anymore due to the chance of the ampule breaking.

There still needs to be a place for the heat to escape...and besides, its not watercooled. The heatsink just has heatpipes.

"We couldn't just go with one 60mm fan because it would not provide the required cooling—as the diameter of the fan increases the air flow performance per revolution increases exponentially. So we ended up putting in two 60mm fans, and we came up with a water-cooled heat sink as well for the CPU. We've actually applied for a patent on that one.

The water cooled term is being used loosely; actually it is a heat sink constructed of a copper base, aluminum stamped fins and copper heat pipe. The heat pipe contains water and a vacuum is pulled on the pipe prior to sealing.

Water under a vacuum boils at a lower temperature than at atmospheric pressure, so when the water boils and becomes steam, the steam rises and moves the heat higher into the fins where the air flow from the fans can extract the heat more efficiently. Once the steam is cooled it condenses and flows back down the pipe as water to the copper base of the heat sink, which is attached to the processor to continue the condensing and cooling processes cycle."

Yes I do realize Mercury is very toxic, but thanks for the smart ass reply. You do realize that mercury is still very common, for example every neon sign you see still contains vaporized mercury ?

I've seen a picture. It's pretty much an XP-90. It's just hype. They're just saying the heatpipes = water cooling, which of course is BS.

Actually, the 360 has numerous issues and I don't believe it is all heat related. I know a guy who works at the Walmart near my place and he said if anything the Kiosk has turned more people off than on. Artifacts during gameplay, crashes, lockups, MASSIVE power consumption, they had to put it on its own circuit because they were tripping breakers. The unit there is not in the standard kiosk but in the glass case, which is where the Xbox/PS2 demo units had been for years running 24x7.

And as far as the water-cooling, it is a heatpipe with liquid under pressure.

haha. They are trying to tell people a heatpipe is liquid cooling. Wow I dont belive this thing is going to be such a huge bust.

How is the 360 drawing enough power to trip circuit breakers? That shouldn't be possible unless maybe they have space-heaters, hair-driers, and arc-welders plugged in in the back of the store as well. :D

That's ridiculous.

umm no the 360 wont pull enough power to trip all the brakers...lol. if tha problem is really happening then there is something else causing it. stores, dont have a circuit braker just for the 360 display, so chances are there are like 50 other things running on the same braker in the store. ..lol at most, it should pull the same amount of power as the pc you run at home.

if u have a gaming pc at home, just donwload the call of dudy 2 and king kong demos. the graphics look 99% the same as they do on a high end pc.

over all i think the console is a great buy. your getting the power of a high end pc for a fraction of the price. since its a console, youll also get to see developers fully push the graphics to the limits. with PCs, most developers dont jump on the the latest features right away (hdr, sm3, etc) because only a small amount of their market has that hardware.

i cant wait to play PGR, and condemed on it

the way kong was modeled is rather impressive. the texture on the t-rex REALLY sux. and the background polygons? it looks like the ps2 could've generated the background. the only thing that was slighty impressive was the way kong was modeled. however, if you've downloaded any of the ati tech demos when the 9700 was releasd, you'll notice its nothing really ground breaking

Im EXTREMELY PISSED OFF, i can't begin to describe how ignorant and god damn lazy these WALMART EMPLOYEES are, i finally got my hands on the 360, i loaded up COD2 and the first thing i see is that there jaggies and an EXTREME yellow tint on the tv, so i go through the game and it looked amazing better the max settings on the demo(besides resolution, and i am aware full game has higher texture settings.) now i couldn't finish it, i cant play without inverted joystick and i saw no option to change it so now i move on to KAMEO. This game is down right BEAUTIFUL but again jaggies-non issue as of now to me. Kameo had to be the most fun game and defiantly has me thinking of buying it. Now the most visually impressing game so far and thats Peter Jacksons KING KONG, i can tell you right now that OUT OF EVERY GAME I HAVE PLAYED the most graphically impressive MADE straight out no contest is king kong on the 360, my mouth WAS hanging open playing it, i was awe struck and it looked so beautiful i couldn't care less with no AA on it.

now obviously i noticed there was no AA, but i could tell it was running interlaced on COD2. I went and asked a lady behind me if shed mind letting me get into the dashboard(actual) she was so pissed i even dared to stop her from the most important talk with her friend KISHA, with a cocky attitude she basically told me to get one yourself and you can do whatever the damn well you please with it cause i don't give a shit. Ok now Im slightly aggravated and i realized that not a single BLACK LADY there is gonna help me(now let me explain, i DO have a slight dislike to African Americans, BUT i SURELY do not judge an individual until i speak to them because i have many black friends and the agree with my annoyances but still this is a problem that has grown on me because of the mistreatment that i get from this race every day)

so Im pissed.....i walk over to PS2 demo of burnout revenge, i noticed it looked like they managed to get a resolution lower then 640x480 on the tv lol, while Im playing a women(African, but shes nice let me go on ok?) speaks to a walmart employee(whos white....)she walks away after dealing with him and says he hates me....dumb redneck, so i comment "its ok, that one black lady over there almost killed me for asking her a question" she laughed and said "yeah i saw that." Ok so the guy she was talking to i notice has a xbox key chain round his neck so i go follow him, he seems like hes in a rush, following him on the outer perimeter of the store he stops up front by the cash registers so i go talk to him. I asked him if he knows anything about the xbox 360.....he takes about 10 seconds to even turn his head and acknowledge me so i go on about how it looks amazing but i don't think HD is enable. So after staring at me he says"Microsoft said its high definition" so i asked him has he seen the dashboard himself "Microsoft said it is" getting pissy-er, so i ask him if i can look around its dashboard "OF COOOUURSE, theres nothing better i can do with my time then go help you with your VERY IMPORTANT problem" i went on and said of course, i know how important your job is here and that its so painful to do it you like to go on walks around the store as fast as possible avoiding human contact, walking back to your department and standing there for a little bit, and circling the store again.....and again.....and again.....i can't imagine how hard your life is, i mean i bet you have to do everything around here yourself...... he walks off, later when Im leaving the store i see him walking back by the jewelery section circling the store, again  shame the manager wasn't there.

Defiantly gonna try and get ahold of the manager.

If that isn't flame-bait, I don't know what is. Luckily I have the ability to keep my mouth shut this time

if they werent commenting on me.....then uh im paranoid?lol but i only played the very beginning of the king kong demo, i couldnt figure out how to distract mr.T-rex in time in which i asked the lady to get in the dashboard, got pissed and walked off

but the beggining had better normal maps lighting and textures ive seen on any released game to date

dude, take a pill

It's perfectly fine to have an opinion, but to execute it with such disregard isn't always the best course. You speak as though the employees at Walmart earning minimum wage owe you a lifetime of service. I know you've flamed me before, but I'm not going to do the same. Since the maturity has gone downhill here, I predict the thread will be locked soon.

obviously they fucked up somewhere in life, not my fault they work at walmart but obviously it wasnt probably a first choice career....so they should be grateful

but again i dont want lifetime service, but if they wanna treat me like shit there lucky i dont wanna be kicked out of walmart for the rest of my life

did i mention.....its only this way in the eletronics department, which was all black women who wanted to talk and ignore everyone else + a redneck who needs to be fired

The last time I checked this thread wasn't about walmart employees. Knock that shit off right now. You guys want to discuss your dislike of the walmart 360 preview go right ahead, but this IS NOT a debate of walmart employees PERIOD.

lolz, just send an e-mail to their manager and be done with it. Tell him you we're trying to ask about a the console and the people were practically driving you away, and they've been doing it to everyone.

They advertise it like that because the average joe is the target consumer. He hears it in such a way that he automatically associates it with the watercooling in expensive highend PC's... ergo.. Cool! :D

Want some more laughs? Try reading some of those flyers they give out in hardware shops advertising their 'latest and greatest'. Some of the one's i've seen were all true, but so overblown you'd just roll your eyes and pity the guy who falls for it.

Never trust marketing.

Liquid methane is usually what's used in heatpipes, not mercury. To the best of my recollection.

The 360 at my local walmart was "Out of Service" as described by the lovely hand written swag note taped to the front of the unit.

its not water cooled. I dont even read much about the 360 and I know that.
its got a water filled heat pipe, sealed under VACUUM so the water vaprorizes at lower tempature, carries the heat to the rest of heatsink and then condenses back and circulates.

lots of wallmarts it interfears with there smart system

and i just played king kong pc demo........polygon and texture wise it doesnt even come close, its about as close as xbox vs xbox360 screenshot with DX 9 max detail and 1280x720 widescreen(of course xbox360 had no AA but it looked worlds better)

I played it the other day when the local compusa got it in. I'm kinda pissed microsoft didn't put some racing demos on the machine or hell maybe a demo of doa or something that is 2 player. Over all kong had some good graphics but I didn't like the controls. I ended up playing a bunch of call of duty. Call of duty had some texture errors but the game seemed to run pretty good.
