just a quick question: AFAIK the penryn based xeons will require a new mainboard. Is that correct? Or will they be drop-in compatible with current 53xx based xeons mainboards?

I believe Penryn based desktop processors are drop-in replacements, and therefore it should be the same for most recent socket 771 server boards. Maybe a BIOS flash is required, though. You should check with your motherboard manufacturer before purchasing.

It's guaranteed that Nehalem will require new infrastructure.

Seaburg (replacement for 5000x) just started popping up recently. Tyan already may have their boards in channel. Atacom is already listing the TYAN S5392ANR on their website.

Well, hopefully a motherboard manufacturer will start shipping some boards then.
Because Tyan still ain't.

Can't be worse than 5000-series, and it's totally broken whack-a-mole INTRC, but these days Intel's chipset department is just astounding me with incompetence. They haven't even caught up to the AMD8132 yet.
