Plasma vs LCD vs DLP

OK I have wanted to ask this a for a long time and seeing as there are a LOT of wide screen hdtv people here I will.
I have looked at a lot of sets and wanted a 60" dlp but in stores from BB to the custom shops they can't (won't show you) a std feed picture on the units. Always a closed feed of HD max pictures for sales.
BUT most 90% of what I watch is not even available in High Def. HELL I have directv and they have very few channels in HD.
SO what do you get in std feeds?
black bars down both sides? (I know they don't want to show this in demos)
so does this make a 50" doing std feed picture into what, the same as a 32" normal tube set?

My seating is about 10' from the set(MAX) more like 8'...what size screen should I be looking at?

a big thanks for info on NON HD pics on the big screens.
ps I don't see any problems with the dlp wheels...sure wish they would go 3 chip and forget the wheel though.

If you have a plasma or CRT you'll want to stretch it to fill the screen just to be safe on the burn-in issue. With DLPs and LCDs you can either stretch it to keep the screen filled with program material or watch normally.....which means black or gray bars on the right and left sides. BTW, you'll be surprised how much HD is now available. Hook up some rabbit ears to get the digital off-the-air channels and just about everything at nite on FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS is HD. All the other stuff though on your garden variety cable or satellite broadcasts is SD.

One thing u guys haven't mentioned about plasma's aswell. It at certain amount of feet above sea level, they can be dangerous. Not sure if that applies to current model Plasma's but its a fact. So if your living somewhere really high up be warned.
Basically, if you live at an altitude higher than 7k feet (higher than Santa Fe) then it can compromise the components.

Ok, we are going to get the plasma, we went to best buy and they had both the Plasma and DLP on display, and the plasma looked awesome, and we really like the fact we can put it on the wall, etc. Now we did get charter digital cable, because I heard regular cable usually looks like crap from a digital box. But the digital cable box only has composite and coxial outputs. Is this usually or what? Also what HDTV antenna would you guys suggest. We are in Madison, WI so I am assuming we can pick some HD channels..

Good choice, welcome to the plasma club. I don't know anything about Charter digital cable boxes but you'll want to try a Zenith "silver sensor" antenna for your over the air HD. I also highly recommend getting a Colorvision SpyderTV colorimeter to help take the guesswork out of calibrating the set.....if you have an upconverting dvd player with component, S-video and DVI or HDMI then you can run the program separately for all the inputs. Once you get it properly set up and playing a good HD feed or dvd...your DLP/projection/LCD friends will be envious. ;)

After helping my brother shop at Tweeter & CC this weekend, I saw it like this:

1. 1080p LCD 40/46" Sony V2500 series - this looked the best, the closest to my XBR CRT in picture quality. It also didn't have the ugly flicker in ESPN HD sports broadcasts I saw on the 768p Sony LCDs (S2010 series).

2. Sony SXRD 50/55" LCOS projections - these look great at eye level (bad vertical viewing angles). Yeah, it doesn't look as good as the V2500 LCD, but you get 10" more for the same price.

3. 50" 768p plasma Panasonic - just didn't like this set, it didn't seem very bright. Disappointing, I expected to like the plasmas more. The only plasmas I think look great are the $6000 ones.

My brother went with the 40" LCD for $1900 from Tweeter, over the 50" SXRD projection, cause he wanted picture quality over size. Tough call for me, either one is a great buy.
