Guys,

I've mentioned that I'm going to try and pump up on the folding by several k's of PPDs. However my plans has suddenly took a shift away from that and the funds are going to be going to my travel oversea.

I will try to keep my boxes folding for as long as I can and as long I over take Roman_79 before I depart. Where the hell am I going? Well I'm going to Tanzania in Africa. THough I will not be folding over there but I'll be helping "Unit for the Deaf" school at Mwanza, Tanzania. I'm currently working on getting the necessary things prepared before I leave. To be quite honest, I will miss being online, hell I don't even know if the place where I'm going to be living at will even have internet access. If not I'll have another things to do such as take pictures and write a daily journal while I'm over there.

I'm working on the funds to get the MacBook and a Entry Level DSLR. Let me tell ya something, Entry Level DSLR ain't easy to pick out of a line up of several good ones... I've been pondering around with the Nikon D40, D40X, D50, D70, D70s, D80, Rebel XT, Rebel XTi and Alpha 100. I think I'm starting to side with Alpha 100 or D50. I'm still not too sure at the moment. And the worst thing is that I'll be leaving the US on May 31st. yeah I know, what a shock :)

Just thought my folding buddies ought got to know of this. You've got it now.

Ok, I am here now!!! The Nikon's are good, I have heard the Xti is decent, it all depends on what pics you are going to be taken. I am sure we will miss you around these parts of town. Your going for a great cause, and I don't think you will ever regret your choice. I hope you can get some scratch together for your MacBook and Camera as well. Be careful over in Africa. I guess drop us a line if you do find a terminal that you can use and let us know how things are going Jon. Best of Luck!
 
I have the D50 and it serves its purpose really well. What kind of pictures are you planning on taking?

Are you actually going there to help deaf kids get some education and such ? I had a similar project 15 years ago personnally to go to Burkina Faso for 3 weeks to help local teachers with the lessons for a group of deaf kids. I dropped it at the last minute due to the airplane tickets issue ( had no money to pay it :( ).

All I know at this moment is that a friend and I, we, will be helping with the education, construction and doing home visits. Amongst some other activities. I also believe that we will be getting one week worth of break, I plan to use that time to visit the neighboring places.

Well, since I'm gonna be around people and this is Africa dude. I really want a 18-200m lens but I only have a budget of around 1k for the camera and I've a budget of around 1.5k for the macbook. If I'm able to toss around some there and here I'm hoping to be able to obtain some awesome pictures of people and the landscapes. I doubt that the KIT Lens will do the job but if money permits, I'll get something else. And it has to be soon.

Thanks for your feedback, I agree with you on the "I don't think you'll ever regret" part. Hell I'm blowing money to go there but I reckon the experience's more worth than the money I'm going to be spending on travelling there. I'll be sure to drop you guys some lines when I'm able to do so. Really, I just don't know, I'm a little overwhelmed right now.

I was approached my a friend of mine this Monday informing me that a person had dropped out because he wasn't able to go, hence the last min notification and I got interested into this and I signed up for it on the following day and I got approved only yesterday, so it's offical. It's a mind blowing thing to be doing. I'm really excited about this. I suppose it's safe to say that I've 2.5k Budget to spend on both laptop and camera. So if anybody are able to snag some kind of a deal, please let me know where I could snag a great deal. Thanks guys for your input so far. I'll be sure to kick the first Moose I see down there... I reckon they're adaptful and hiding somewhere down there. :D

I'm getting a D80 with a 18-200mm lense. I'd really like to get a D200, but it's a little too expensive. That and I'd have to dump my SD cards and buy CompactFlash.

Is that one of the Kit that they offer? I just went to the bookstore at RIT and looked at their selection. I think I'm going with the XTi Body and one of these lens;
EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
EF 28-135mm IS USM
EF 50mm f1.4 USM

With these combination, I could be paying 1079.9 through 1299.9 and that's for the body and one of these lens only. If I were to go with a kit which comes to 831.95 and added one of the lens, lets say the EF 50mm f1.4 USM, will come to a total of 1166.9 dollars.

Hell I'm going to list all of the lens that I looked at and is within the budget of mine.
Fixed:
50mm f1.4 USM - 334.95
85mm f1.8 USM - 367.95
28mm f1.8 USM - 429.95

Zoom:
17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - 554.95
24-85mm USM - 334.95
28-135mm IS USM - 439.95

I would buy any one of the lens I listed above along with a XTi body or a kit depending on how much they come down to. It's really tough choosing lens :( I could not afford two unless I got a XTi Kit and then I could probably afford the ones under 400 bucks. So what do ya say? Oh on an additional note, I'll be able to get me a MacBook for 1049.99 or change. My total budget for laptop and camera sits right at 2.5k. If anyone here has experience with similiar things, please chime in :) I need the help... The Moose came from Africa and kicked me in the nutz already... I'll need your help capturing him digitally.

I'm no pro, but I got the D80 at xmas and have been thrilled with it. My first SLR.

I can finally catch pictures that all digital camera's I've ever had before were just to slow to get. And I can fire off several in a row with no problem.

Camera and lense ran me about $1200 in December, probably down a bit since then. It's a great camera. I use a 4gig SD card and it holds close to 500 pictures at 10megapixel super fine setting.

I'm going to use it to teach myself a better understanding of photography that you just can't get using a point and shoot. I won't be buying another camera until Leica finally gets around to building the next R system camera, probably late '08.

Hey charpman, are you numbers on that 4 gig SD card for JPEG or RAW files? I'm not even going to bother shooting JPEG, RAW is where it's at. I just need to spend money on a good batch processing program, probably Adobe Lightroom, possibly Apple Apeture. I haven't done any photo work since Photoshop 5.5, so I'm going to have to reteach myself damn near everything. I'll be doing it all on a Mac Pro, so I'll have to learn a new OS as well. Good times, good excuse for a fast machine.
 
JPEG :)

Files sizes are in the high 3meg to low 4meg per picture. RAW sizes aren't bad, between 10-15megs. If I get more into photography I will probably switch to RAW but for now superfine jpeg is enough for my needs.

Have fun! My uncle has been to Tanzania several times and he really enjoyed it. I have seen his pictures and it looks incredible. That is also where my favorite coffee comes from. Tanzania Peaberry FTW!

Adobe Camera Raw(ACR) is really good for raw images. I use Adobe Bridge to view all the thumbnails, select all the images I want, and they'll all open up as thumbnails in ACR and I can manually adjust all the settings for each image and then open up or save all the images in one swoop when I'm done - will save to jpg,photoshop,dng,tiff in ACR. Yes the whole Adobe package is expensive, I wouldn't have been able to afford it, but I got a student discount.

I'm using ACR right now on the other monitor.:cool:

My camera is an old Fuji S7000. The raw files have really extended the life of this camera for me, and has allowed me to save some images that would have been lost if I hadn't shot in raw.
 
I have a d40...I highly recommend it, but if you have the funds get a d200. The d80 is about the same price but the d200 has a better meter and more acurate exposure. Also, the d200 (and the d80) has a body motor, while the d40 does not. That means that I cannot use A/F in lenses that do not have motors in them...and that's a pain because the older nikon 70-300 is damn nice, but I have to manually focus it. The other thing to do, is grab a good VR lense. The 18-200 VR is nice, but the 70-300 VR (It WILL work with the d40) is about half the price. That VR has two settings, and with it on, it will let you take hand-held pictures at a much slower shutter speed than you normally could...great for less that bright conditions or for shooting in a vehicle.
