Planetside 2

Just picked this game back up a week ago and have been giving it a solid run. Haven't played since the beta in September.

I must say Sony certainly fixed/polished more than I thought they would. Textures are much higher res, minimum framerate during large battles is much better and animations/clipping issues I experienced are gone.

Teamwork seems to be fairly solid too (at least on NC waterson east). Setup a sunderer behind cover close to an enemy outpost and setup a base of op.

The game could use a pinch of physics (not a massive amount) but I'm being picky :D

If you look in the settings you'll notice they have a disabled GPU physics option. I heard it was too buggy to use now but they plan on adding it sometime.

Been out for over a month, and i still get turned off by the performance issues of this game. Im BR 35 for now, but find myself playing less and less.

Lol I checked this thread just for that. Need to get this optimized! I want to play but can't in it's current state. I have standards.

No. What you have to do is buy SC on triple cash day. I dropped $60 on 4 Walmart cards and cashed them in on Friday for 24,000 SC (4x SC) - more SC than I know what to do with. I shouldn't have to worry abut unlocking a weapon for a very long time. Upgrading them with certs though... that will take some time. But it's all fun anyway.

So basically , no?

I'm not interested in dumping $60 into the game if I can't get a feel for what other weapons are actually like. I don't generally like investing that kind of time in a F2P game unless I can see how the end game will be and if it can keep me entertained or not.

The weapons have a trial that lets you test them out. Find a fight and activate the trial before deploying.

Should give you enough time to get familiar with it and test recoil, RoF, etc.

From the PhysX youtube videos I saw, I was under the impression it was primarily for particle effects. Actual terrain deformation or structure destruction I haven't seen yet.

Game is still fun though :p

Haven't had any performance issues, but the game is pretty boring to play all by your lonesome.

Playing any MMO by yourself is always going to be suboptimal. The barrier to joining an outfit might seem high, but remember this isn't WoW where you're forced to raid all the time. In my outfit, all participation is optional and I suspect the vast majority of outfits run that way and flourish because of it.

Find yourself an outfit and this game suddenly makes every other FPS obsolete, trust me.

This. I removed BF3 and other multiplayer FPS from my PC about 4 weeks ago and never installed them back.

Planetside just plain fun. I play infiltrator and lonewolfing is fun but platoon gameplay is excellent. Juts find a good platoon with excellent platoon leader.

That was EPIC :) Why did they crash all galaxies into Crown? What happen with people inside?

We had been just beating our head against the crown for about 30 minutes around an hour before we were going to officially start ops, outfit decided to do a galaxy bombing run (some people jumped before they blew, but most suicided). Chat was pretty funny afterward. TB may have an ops video up later if he had enough good footage.

Did you got the Crown after that?

BTW, I'm wondering can I select a camo for my NC infiltrator to look like soldier from another fraction?

Instant Action Major Game Concerns
http://www.planetside-universe.com/news-instant-action-major-game-concerns-2927.htm

Basically stating the game is a major Zerg rush, all about vehicles, no reason to defend bases.

IMHO that problem of major zergs taking over the whole continents is relevant only with Low to Medium populated servers.

High and Very High populated servers do not suffer from that.

Though, I might agree that it must be much more visible to end player what benefits he personally gets from defending the base.

I thought there were 3 maps or continents to this game ? My server seems to always be playing the Indar map only ? Never even seen it rotate to the other continents once yet in two months ?

They need to add 500-1000 xp for defending like when capturing. Very disappointing to have a fun battle, get some kills, yet when the base is defended, no XP from that action. Defending results in some very fun battles, but it seems assaulting gives more XP/certs while still being fun.

How do you know that? Is it possible to see how many platoons are defending something?

No, but you can get a pretty good idea spawning at different points and trying to work your way there. At least 1-2 squads covering each of the the ways up there and 2+ squads of anti-air on the platforms. 4 platoons is a rough estimate.

I've seen the popup when you successfully defend a location, does that not get you any XP then?

I usually get way more xp defending from kills if I'm entrenched in a tacticaly superior position, it sometimes becomes a meat grinder with a never ending enemy rush thru a chokepoint, 3 grenade bandalier and minigun heaven.

How's the minigun working out btw? I trialed it... 2 sec spin up killed it for me.

This is hilarious. This is what you can achieve with weapon that is useless soloing but super cool in teamplay - ANNIHILATOR :)

Yeah, we had three platoons with six heavies per squad firing those things that night. It creates a huge "no fly" zone over a portion of the map and it's downright beautiful to watch. Even if you don't get kills with them, you deny enemy air and armor access to the actual battlefield without sacrificing squads to burster duty.

Like you said though, absolutely worthless at the individual and perhaps even squad level.

I was part of that ^ good times!

Good read. Pretty much agree with everything.

Yep. If PS2 stays as is, it will be ghost servers in 6 months time. The game is based on Zerg rush kills, like massive team death match game, that's it. Very one dimensional and shallow game.

All I do, is log on, check on the map where the action is, deploy there, and then it's like Unreal Tournament days, massive deathmatch action. I rarely see team play.

If you want organized action you should join an active outfit.

And then you have the other extreme with outfits that are only capturing dead bases.

Best fights are usually Bio labs, can't tank zerg them. Tech plants and amp stations are very rarely fun...

Then there is crown. On Soltech Amerish and the snow continent are ghost towns,.

Impulse buy during 3x SC day, rarely use it because of the delay, but it absolutely excels during those long standstills where you know your going to die but want to take out as many people as you can before you do. Throw a few grenades if you have cover and then hop out and unload on anything that moves while the enemy group scrambles to avoid the nades. Gotten 5-6 kills several times that way with a bunch of assist xp.

Hmn... Seems like a nice little tool for Biolab defender

Any sense in starting up now or should I wait until they fix the zerg mess?

Start up now. It is easy to just avoid the zerg swarms by going to a different area of the map. ZvZ doesn't happen very often but it is a lot of fun when it does.
