I currently have a main machine with a Core i7 4790k on an Asus Z97-WS board with 16GB of DDR3-2400 memory. It works well, but it is getting a bit long in the tooth for a gaming machine for my taste. So I was looking to upgrade to a Core i7 7700k, but I'm short on cash to do so.

I also have a Core i7 4930k on a P9X79-E WS board with 32GB of low latency GSkill DDR3-1600 acting as my server. I originally got the 32GB of memory so I could use it as a VMWare host for training, but I've now finished training in that area, as my company is now, after a recent buyout and change in IT management, moving more toward cloud for as much as possible. (I understand their point, but I disagree with this plan, but I'm not really in a position to argue.) It's now a bit much for the minor file server I'm using it for right now.

I figure, from the current costs of similar items on Ebay, I might be able to get $1000 for the 'server' set, then buy a Core i7 7700k set, and then move my main set over to server duty, and still have enough cash left over for an upgrade for my main OS drive to a 500GB 960 EVO, and even possibly get a pizza after that.

What do you guys think? Could I get $1000 for a Core i7 4930k, Asus P9X79-E WS board, and 32GB of memory? Does this sound like a feasible plan?
 
I wouldn't count on getting that kind of cash for those parts. Maybe $500-600, but even that would be stretching. For $1000 you could buy a brand new Asus WS board, RAM and a 7700k.
 
The P9X79-E WS is selling on ebay for about $500-600 on its own. It's a rare board that has 4 full PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, with 3 paired slots that can split off 8 lanes if needed and/or able. (I got a real deal on it used.) I'm running 2 RAID controllers, one internal and one external, a 10Gbe NIC, and a G210 video card on it with slot fans in between for cooling. However, with the X79 chipset, it can't run ECC or registered memory for Xeons. I figure with the CPU and memory, the set is worth $1000.
 
Well, maybe $850-900, now that I look at the memory and CPU prices. The 4930k still sells for $250+, and the memory sells new at $220. So, $500 for the board, $250 for the CPU, and $150 for the memory doesn't sound unreasonable to me.
