Hi,
I have a friend who has a budget of about 500-700 dollars. He wants a solid non-gaming machine.

I would normally build him one, but he wants a warranty, and i do not want to do any support - you know how it goes.

So, can someone recommend some places that sell good PCs, with no proprietary parts like dell likes to do.

Velocity Micro
Dell

Pretty much it.
Argueably, VM offers better CS then Dell. Either will work though.

I like AVA Direct. Two of my friends and my father have AVA Direct computers and they are very happy with their computers. I have an order in at AVA Direct for a new computer, and it is currently being built. I've put a sample configuration together for you. I don't know if you need a keyboard and mouse, so you can subtract $30 if you don't need them. You didn't mention if you needed a monitor, and I didn't include one. You are better off getting a monitor from a local Best Buy or an e-tailer like Newegg, anyway, since they'll be less expensive. AVA Direct computers come standard with a 3-year warranty. This config uses a P35 motherboard, you could save a bit of money by going with a P965 motherboard (P965 is an older chipset, though). You can also save more money if needed by going with a lesser video card.
