ok... my temp computer in my sig now has a WD100 it is a 10 gig western digital... the computer i am using right now has the exact same hard drive... but on this computer it runs in Ultra DMA mode 1... at home i can only get it to run in PIO mode...

i went into device manager and clicked properties on the HD controllers.. set them to "DMA if available".. it changed my 4 gig seagate to UDMA 2.. but my WD100 still shows PIO..

i checked all through my bios and didn't see anything that mentioned DMA except one thing.. which i changed from 3 to 1 and it still doesn't make a difference... i am using 80 pin cables in my computer at home... the one here only has the 40 pin cables...


so does anyone know what is causing this? i read that PIO mode will make a computer run much slower.

Do you have a CDROM drive on the same controller as the harddrive? And does that CDROM not support UDMA?
 
the cdrom is on the secondary chain along with the seagate that is running in UDMA... the WD100 is on the primary and they only drive... should i turn the jumper sideways instead of leaving it as master? or will that not make a difference
 
I've had this problem before, and everytime I get it, I forgot how to fix it like I did before. Really fucking annoying. Try removing the the device from windows and physically from your computer, boot up, use it for a few times, and try putting it back in. Hope this helps...
 
Try reinstalling/updating your mobo drivers. PIO mode is MUCH slower.
 
i never installed the mobo drivers in the first place becasue i got the motherboard for free, and therefore didn't get a cd with it.... how good is ECS with their drivers on their website?


i guess i should have thought of this in the first place... but the comptuers i am using here at work are similar vintage ECS boards with almost the exact same features the UDMA works on them without me installing mobo drivers...
 
ECS is low quality, very near crap on my scale. I have built 2 systems with their boards, of course it too 4 mobos to get 2 working system, but they were uber cheap, so no surprises. I have read about many similar stories. Website, well, at least it's there. :)

PIO versus UDMA is the difference between walking from one side of the US to another, or travelling there at Mach 10.

Check this link . Since you haven't given us your board specifications, I can't give you an exact answer. If its a VIA chipset get the 4n1 drivers, thats the best I can do for ya.

i will get the numbers off the board when i get home tonight and then hit up ecsusa.com and see what i can find... i hope it works...

if not i will flash the bios...

i installed xp on the thing last night... so i don't know what else i could do except removing the IDE controllers in device manager which sounds like it could be a risky thing to do...

Blowing away the PCI to IDE controller in Devman will usually do the trick.
The primary and secondary controller will be removed/reinstalled in the process.
If you have a 9x OS you could always blow away the IDE key under ENUM.
Of course, this ECS prolly uses an SIS chipset for which you can get the IDE drivers directly from SIS.
Usually MS's default drivers are better, though.
 
i got the side off of the case.. and i am reading.. P6SET-ML ... it has an SIS chipset...

doesn't seem to have the drivers i need for XP... just under 9x and nt 4...

i will try blowing away the ide controller in device manager first... because the drivers don't look like they will do what i want...


but why doesn't it even show up as DMA in the bios post screens??? they do at work, not on mine... i have looked all through the bios... is there somethig i am missing?/ also could it be some wierd effect of me trying to overclock??

Update the CMOS if its not posting with DMA then you need to set it, or update your CMOS. The BIOS isn't enumarating your hardware, your not going to be able to set it in Windows.

How do you check to see if your HD and CD-ROM is running in DMA or PIO mode?

Device manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, primary or secondary channel, adv. settings, then each device #. Check the current transfer mode.
