First off, my little set up at home is really simple, I have a modem and a wireless router. Absolutely nothing fancy.

Now last night I was playing a little bit of Metal Gear Online when I kept getting disconnected from my network. Than after a while I couldn't sign into the PSN because of a "DNS" error.

I found that strange so I went into my routers wireless log, which I've never done before, and I found that there were 2 Teardrop Attacks, and 1 Ping of Death. They look like this;

Aug/30/2008 19:11:36 TearDrop Attack Detect 85.181.40.179:5656576.68.37.216:19193 Packet Dropped

Aug/30/2008 23:34:36 Ping of Death Detect 62.214.222.199:3344276.68.37.216:19193 Packet Dropped

I looked around and I'm pretty sure these are malicious things. Can anyone help me decipher these things, if I need to give more information, and what can I do to prevent this from happening again... Thanks!!!

They're irrelevant and unrelated to your xbox live issue - every internet facing system gets hit like that, all the time.

=I

Well you really didn't help me understand what that is exactly, as you can see from my post that I am unsure of what it really means and if there are steps I can take to prevent this sort of thing from happening again.

Now that's said and done, I don't know how much you've read into my post to try to help me, but I am here to learn, like most people who surf the internet so could you please elaborate on what you've said?

And by the by, PSN and Metal Gear Online aren't on Live, they are on the Sony Playstation platform.

Do you have a specific question about these attacks - ie did you google them and not understand what they do? They happen all the time, your router drops the packets - meaning it handles it and they never make it to your computer. Unless it's a veritable flood that saturates your internet bandwidth, simply ignore it.

For reference, the first google results from "ping of death" and "teardrop attack"

Oh thank you. Yeah I looked at those last night and that's why I came to the conclusion that it was malicious in nature.

I guess I should just ignore it than, thanks man.
