ok, well, I'm not exactly an Intel guy here, nor do I use Intel alot. But, I have a question. My friend is wanting to upgrade his Pentium III 500MHz PC to one of the newer PIII's. He is bassicaly just wanting to be able to play some newer games. now, what I had in mind for him is to get the 1.26GHz version of the CPU.
the one he has:

now, I want to know, will this work at all. he has a Gateway PC, with the 500MHz PIII, and if I install it, would I be able to just drop it in straight and have him go about his business without installing any drivers or will it not work/does it need drivers/needs an entire reformat.

If this wiil not work, tell me, are there any other PIII's I can install? I mean he doesn't mind If I reformat, and install new drivers, but if its not nessesary that would be nice.

Are you sure thats the correct 500? The specs are from a Mobile P3-500, which is definately not compatible with a socket-370 P3(fc-pga). The common ones are socket 370 (fc-pga), slot-1, and the newer fc-pga2 (tuatulin).
I'm betting its a slot-1. Any Gateway model number?

And generally, there's nothing to change for a cpu upgrade (ie: drivers, etc)
 
yeah, that's what i'm seeing too-- if it's a slot p3, there's many fewer upgrades he could do without having to swap a motherboard.

that's what i found when i googled your exact proc string

that's kind of an expensive upgrade for an older box, imo.. unless you get the proc for free or off ebay for way cheap..
 
I have had greatly varied results with slotkits, but I have never seen this. If you decide to pick it up LMK if it all works. I have a few processors to upgrade if it works well.

its comparitive to an athlon 1400. With a slotkit though It would hamper perfomance, how seriously is what I do not know.
 
If its a slot1 coppermine core, you potentially can go up to an 850mhz at the same bus and V-core........MAYBE a 1100mhz, but it uses 1.7 volts instead of 1.65. The Gateway bios will probably hold it back somewhere before that though..........OEM sucks.

If its the older katmai core.....I wouldnt bother. It runs on 2volts, letting you have a 550mhz - not enough to make it worth while. MAYBE a 600mhz, but again the volts are slightly different.

Bottom line - check the gateway ID number on the back of the case and go to thier website. You should be able to get the motherboard specs from them, and see which processors are compatible.

Or give us some more info.

Nice to see a slocket for tuatulins.......sometimes they work, sometimes not. It depends on the motherboard.
 
thanks guys, I ran CPU-Z on his machine just now, and its specs:
code name: Katmai core
Slot1 SECC 2
500MHz
512Kb L2

I think I'm just going to tell him to get a new PC, cause he is running 384MBs PC100 in there and its rough around the edges. it still seems to work niceley, runs windows XPSP2 nicely, I guess he will end up using it still thanks though.
 
I have two slot one adapters here that you can buy as a kit with a Tuatulin processor on them. They are made by Powerleap, you can easily do a search on them.

The problem that you will have is that the motherboard will be looking to give anything over 1.8V to the processor. The new P3s demand 1.75v and below, depending on the CPU. What happens is that the board/PSU default back to the 2V value and overvolt the hell out of your CPUs, causing them to overheat and lock up.

To get around this, you put a jumper on two of the end pins of the slot to fool the board into giving 1.75v to the slot. Then all is well.
