I payed $250 for an HD-DVD player, now it's dead so I wanted Blu-Ray and the PS3 seems to be the best player with upgradability to newer specs. I get motion sickness so I can't play a lot of games, but there should be atleast a few that I can play (Little Big Planet). So I just signed up for a Sony CC to get $100 off the PS3, I believe it will work on Buy.com so I won't have to pay shipping + tax. So $299.99 for the system, then I just ordered a Dualshock 3 controller from Buy.com for $40 shipped (GCO FTW) and a Sony Blu Ray remote for $16 shipped (GCO FTW) and Guitar Hero III from Amazon Gold Box for $65 shipped. Overall a pretty good deal for $420. I know I get bored with games, but having the Blu Ray support is what got me. I had a 360 which I got rid of, but I do have a PSP and DS. I know the PSP can interface with the PS3, not sure what it does, but I'll be checking it out. So if anyone is looking for PS3 deals there ya go.

You shouldn't have bought the bluray DVD remote because I'm pretty sure that you can setup your PSP to be a remote for your PS3.

Well yeah...but if you're going to do that, you might as well just use the controller.

Yeah I mean I dunno if its easier or not or even how to do it, I was just aware that it was possible.

congrats on the new purchase, you've got a lot of entertaining stuff there for $400. I personally like the sony blu-ray remote, it works great. you should consider renting/buying Uncharted, it's a good PS3 game.

Yeah, I dunno about the need for the Blu Ray remote unless it'll do standard programmable IR stuff in my case. I already have one remote for my TV/Stereo/Etc. so if I'm going to bother with a 2nd remote, I'll just use the Sixaxis. Once you know what the buttons do, it's good enough for me.

Smart to buy the PS3 as a Blu-ray player....honestly there aren't that many really good games for the system yet. (that can't also be found on the 360 if you have one) Mine gets used almost exclusively for Blu-ray rentals although I did buy GT5 Prologue (ripoff) and have been having a great time playing GTA4 lately. The remote makes Blu-ray operation much easier...but it is possible to use the wireless controller. the worst part is that the Bluetooth makes it hard to integrate into a home theater...I have a Harmony 880 that controls a 42" plasma, Toshiba HD-XA2, Philips dvr and an Oppo HDMI switch yet still have to have a separate remote for the PS3.:(

edit- yes, I know there are workarounds for the PS3 remote but they aren't really worth it to me..

I am actually looking for a DualShock3 contoller and a bluray remote before MGS4 comes out.

Does GCO in your post mean Google Check-Out?
Cause that is a hell of a deal for those.

i was never a fan of the PS3 but now that bluray has won :)() and there are some good lookin games coming out , FINALLY, I'll prolly pick one up after the next price drop.

God, it sucks living in California. The tax on these Newegg and buy.com deals kill it for me most of the time. PSP support with the PS3 has remote audio and video streaming. Game streaming for select games (AFAIK Pixeljunk Monsters and Lair) and apparently pre-encoded movies for the PSP when you purchase the same movie on blu-ray ( select titles )

I thought google checkout gave you 10 bucks off your first purchase? When I did google check out my total for the dualshock 3 was 45 out the door. Am I missing something?

I did the Sony Card discount about 6 months ago. Read the small print, the $100 back only works if you do your first purchase at the Sony Store.

Theres another one that works anywhere. Different than the other offer!

I was just going to say that. PS3 controller works just fine for it; no need for remote.

Enjoy your PS3. Given the right TV, movies look stunning. Given the right Surround System, sound is top notch.

I don't agree with the opinions on using the controller as a remote. I recommend getting an after market infra red remote and then getting a Harmony (or Pronto, or whatever) universal remote and programming the IR remote into it. I just don't understand how people can buy $10,000 worth of AV equipment and then have 22 remote controls lying around for their other halves to try and decipher. Get one nice easy remote (I prefer the Monster MCC-AVL 300 RF remote), spend the 20 minutes to program it, and be a much happier person for it. It's the best $300 you can spend on your AV system.

my $0.02

While I agree that's nice - I've got all 3 systems so it's not like I can consolidate those controllers into one option...so no matter what, I still have misc. controllers laying around. Still, someone who has multiple systems should likely have a good universal remote. I literally only have one non-gampad remote, too.
I have everything short of my game controllers all programmed into my $25 programmable Sony IR remote (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...emote&lp=1&type=product&cp=7&id=1138083504542) and it'll literally do everything except work with the PS3. Since I have to have the PS3 pad around and because it works well with the pad, I've got no real reason to buy anything else.
That remote has a universal volume switch and every button can either be auto-loaded from a profile or manually programmed. It even has macros to swap between different video inputs on my TV and receiver at the same time. I can swap to any function in my entertainment center in 2 button presses. You don't have to go for the expensive remotes. Just make sure you've got a programmable one.

It's best to wait a couple of weeks and get the Metal Gear Solid PS3 bundle on June 12th.

PS3 remote is Bluetooth, but there are hybrid BT/IR options now.

I;s the only remote I use in my dedicated HT. I just turn on the sources by hand (PJ, console, receiver)

I have not adjusted the volume on my receiver in a long time- for either games or movies.

Really? Granted I don't have to make a ton of changes, but I definitely have to tweak my volume from game to game and item to item. Some (like Tekken and Motorstorm) I'm as low as 35, but with movies and TV (or GTA4) it'll spike as high as 60.

Did some digging and it seems there are a couple titles out that support remote play.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed
  • Possibly the first 3rd party game to include this feature
  • Fully playable from PSP
High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition

  • Fully playable via PSP remote play
    • Must perform upgrade to game by launching from PS3 first
  • Graphics look phenomenal, online play through PSP works great as well
PixelJunk Eden
  • Remote Play listed under key features, along with trophy support
PixelJunk Monsters
  • Fully playable via PSP remote play
  • "We also support PSP remote play and it is probably one of the first games that supports this really well - ie. it is totally playable through your PSP, even at low bandwidths."
PSone Downloadable Games
  • All PSone games work via remote play
  • Requires:
    • PS3 Firmware 2.10, released 12-18-07
    • PSP Firmware 3.80, released 12-18-07
      • After more feedback it appears PSP Firmware 3.72 works fine
Folding@home
  • Folding@home can be remotely operated through the Remote Play feature of your PS3 system
    • Functionality added in client v1.2 - updated 8/21/07
Media
  • You can use remote play to access media streamed from your PC
    • This includes live tv streamed to your PSP if you have the right gear
      • Comment: User Joker4529 recommends +2 responsiveness and normal quality for best results
  • If you have a media server such as TVersity, this means you can stream & transcode video/audio/photos to your PS3, while viewing remotely on your PSP
  • Update: With PS3 firmware 2.20, you can select "Audio Output" to play your music through your PS3 (PSP acts as remote control)

Is Eden actually out yet? Is it as good as all the other PixelJunk games?

I can't play MGS4 due to motion sickness. There is BC but I'm not really going to be interested on last gen games. It has a DualShock 3 vs Sixaxis, But I already bought a DS3. The last thing would be HD size, I assume 40 gigs will be enough, if not i'll throw a 250 in there.

Read on COG and Slickdeals that Walmart will be giving $100 Blu Ray GC's w/ PS3's. So $400- $100 Sony Style = $300 PS3 and $100 worth of Blu Ray movies. Pretty sweet deal.

Well yeah...but if you're going to do that, you might as well just use the controller.

Yea, gamepad is actually easier to use than the remote because the buttons are bigger and it is easier to know which one does what in the dark. I have the remote and pressed the wrong buttons all the time so no longer use it.

im very interested in this deal for the sony card, as i was burned by the hd dvd a month after i purchased it, a new sony 1080p 120hz tv and sony surround sound :(. Standard dvds on this tv just dont cut it compared to HD :).

Just get the BR remote.. the people saying they dont know how to work the remote dont have any sony products. ALL their TV remotes are designed pretty much exactly the same and the main buttons are HUGE.. i dont understand the confusion. The multiple remote thing is stupid too.. Having a universal and a PS3 BR remote isnt bad at all. Most people leave their remotes on a coffee table anyways. You might have to use 2 remotes, but it doesnt mean that you have to use all your other IR remotes because you have the BR one. If youre like me and have a big TV in your room, then you can just hide your remotes and such. Luckily i chose my TV while i was redoing my room so i got a couch with compartments in the arm rest to hide both of my remotes.

The PS3 remote is *crap* compared to the 360 remote.Doesn't even have a night light mode. Friend of mine bought a standalone Sony BD player and it is the same *crap* design. How am I supposed to tell the buttons apart in the dark when they are all tiny little black buttons with no lights? They should put brail on all of the buttons instead of just the play button. That would help a lot.
