Picking RAM for overclock...

So I've been looking into a budget upgrade and a Barton 2500+ comes to mind. Seeing as they're decent overclockers to begin with, I figure a moderate overclock would be simple.

Seeing as the processor runs at 333FSB, wouldn't picking up pretty much any DDR400 (PC3200) ram allow a decent overclock to at least a 400FSB? I would think that it wouldn't be a problem since that is what the ram is really designed for.

Asus A7N8X-X
Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton)
Geil Value Series 512MB (2.5-3-3-6)
 
Pick up this memory instead. Buffalo PC3200. It carries CH-5 ICs and will out-do the Geil.

Bartons now come multiplier locked ..in this case you need a good mobo and memory capable of higher FSB to allow for a noticeable overclock. You can get a Mobile Barton instead. ..these aren't multiplier locked and their default volts are 1.45v compared to 1.65v on the regular bartons. They work fine in desktop motherboards and they clock to 2.4-2.8GHz on air cooling.

I had taken a look at the mobile series, but I had thought that there was a major performance difference between the 266FSB core (forgot what it was called) and the Barton core. Though the idea of running less voltage (and therefore less heat) is definitely a nice one.

But would I really need an unlocked multiplier if I get a board capable of a 400FSB, and the chip is only a 333? It really shouldn't be difficult to just select 400FSB with the same multiplier and end up running 3200+ speeds (if I calculated right).

Noted on the CH5 chips. I'm still unclear on what exactly the chips on the ram is that people refer to (CH5, BH5, etc), but I'm assuming it's a controller chip, in which case I completely understand why certain ones can be better then others.
 
Both of these mobile and desktop parts are barton cores featuring 512k of L2. The only difference is the bus speed. But when you overclock ..that does not matter. ;) You can get 200 x 12.5 with one of these. Or if you get a better motherboard ..250 x 10.

Achieving 400fsb with desktop 333fsb part is easy ..even if it's locked. Stock multiplier on the desktop 2500+ barton is 11. 200 x 11 is 2.2GHz (XP 3200+ speeds). Right the mobile CPUs are a much better bargain.

It's just the chips themselves. They likes tight timings and generally would be better than anything found under those Geil. The BH-5 is mostly perferred because they tolerate high voltage and achieve High frequencies.
 
Yep, I'm using a Mobile Barton 2400 in mine (NewEgg was out of 2500s when I ordered and now also have 2600s).

As far as memory, I am using Kreton PC3500 (2,3,3,7,1T). It's like $92 for a stick of 512mb at NewEgg. Works really good. I picked my memory based on latency and speed. It's running at 2,3,3,7,1T at 210 FSB so it's holding up real well. $50 cheaper than Kingston Hyperx and seems to be just as good.
