I will be mostly using the speakers for music and movies. I would like to keep the price under $350 for both sub and bookshelfs. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated :D

I personally have the PSW10 and I do not like it. It is getting replaced Friday.
 
I've heard nothing good about that Polk sub.

Also, I'm not sure I've ever seen a thread debating between a $30 pair of speakers and a $200 pair of speakers. :p

I own these RTi4s for rears, RTi6s for fronts, a matching center, and the little 8" brother of this sub. The setup sounds great. I originally just had the RTi4s and they are great.

What is your source? What size of room?

and get a sub later after saving more money.
 
I do not think you will be happy with bookshelves in a 20' x 20' room. I think you should get floorstanders with your budget.
 
depends on how far away his listening position is, but i'd agree with you in general. he should save money and buy more capable speakers.

hopefully it's not a perfectly square room.
 
True. In my apartment, technically my room is too big for my bookshelves (Polk RTi6, Polk RTi4, CSi3, BIC v-80), due to the fact that the kitchen, living room, and dining area are all combined. If I'm standing in my kitchen listening to music, it just sounds OK. In the cockpit for movie watching, it sounds awesome.

OP, where is your listening position?
 
That's basically nearfield. Good output bookshelves will probably work just fine for you. I'd have to stand by my previous reccomendation.

None of the speakers suggested so far are powered, so no, your soundcard almost certainly isn't enough. It likely won't even connect to them. You'll need a receiver or other amp of some sort.

The subwoofers ARE powered, run the connections from the bookshelfs to the terminals on the sub, and run a 3.5mm to rca cable to the input on the back of the sub. Shouldn't that work?
 
the subwoofer amp is for the subwoofer ALONE. it will not power any other speakers. the speaker level connections on the sub are there in case you are using an amp or receiver without bass management and you need to use the sub's built in crossover.

Nope, won't work like that, you'll still need a receiver to power the speakers so far mentioned in this thread.

However, if what you're looking for is a setup that is completely self powered you will be better off getting a set of studio monitors.

Bookshelf speakers are fine with 20' x 20'.

1. Sound cards don't matter too much [these days]. The X-Fi will be fine.
2. You have $350, I'd recommend spending it on used gear.

Ok guys thanks for the input. Here's what I'm going to do, when I have gathered about $500-700 get one of the bookshelf's mentioned with the BIC F12 sub. Thanks!! Oh and also I have a receiver already don't know if its a good one, but its a Sony STR-DG510.

edit: The only reason why I have that receiver is because I got it for free :) NIB
 
It's from 2007, so it doesn't have the latest features, and its HDMI stuff only allows 1080i, but for your purposes, it'll do just fine as long as it still works. Just run some lamp cord (yes, just some old crap wire you have laying around that's at least 14 AWG) from the receiver's posts to the speakers, hook up the soundcard out to the receiver, and you'll be good to go. The sub will hook up separately, usually through an RCA cable to the receiver.

Just scored some good condition, original parts Polk monitor 10s for $150 today. Hendrix sounds bad ass on them. With my $40! Diy cables. Just wanted them fat with banana plugs and nice sleeving. You know, have to pimp a little bit.
