I've been using Firefox since I was 17 (about to be 24 in August) and I love it, but as we all know things can change, and so now I'm starting to experiment with other browsers. I wanna hear some opinions from my fellow [H]'rs !

I've recently started using the new version of Google Chrome and I'm really starting to like it, and having some serious conflicting issues over wether or not I want to switch back to FireFox. What I love about Chrome over FireFox is the streamlined use of stuff like Gmail, Last.Fm,etc...The only thing I'm not sure about is which one is better when it comes to security. I'm still new to the whole internet security/networking arena, and still trying to figure out whats important in a web browser,anti-virus/spyware, etc, when it comes to security and protection. so lets here all the opinions on the big 4 (IE, FF, GC and Opera (which I do love opera mini on my iPod touch)

edit - I would like to apologize to Safari fans for not including them in this discussion, but I know all I want to about that browser, and am not a fan, so thats why i opted to leave it out :(

And that was my choice, as always. I consider it to the be the best browser overall for me because it offers so much - the addons are unmatchable, the ease of use, the near complete customization, scripting support, etc...

Yes, other browsers may have a speed edge in one given benchmark (Sunspider being the one most commonly used) but I think people need to focus on more than just that one thing which is exactly what they do to the dismissal of all others.

Also, most people don't even consider what those numbers mean:

If Chrome finishes Sunspider in 390 ms, and Firefox finishes it in 790 ms, most people think "OMFG it's twice as fast!!!" which technically would be true. But 390 ms vs 790 ms - excusing the "big number syndrome" is just ~4/10 tenths of a second vs ~8/10ths of a second - we haven't even gotten to 1 fucking full second yet.

People see big and small numbers and OMFG IT'S SO FAST...

Speed ain't everything, it's just a tiny aspect in the bigger picture which is what I personally choose to focus on, not the singular aspects when it comes to a browser.

Firefox loads web pages, displays content, is customizable out the ying-yang, is set up precisely the way I want it to be, and is the best browser for me that exists today and potentially the foreseeable future. Just because it loads pages a tiny bit slower (tiny bit slower being the operative phrasing) doesn't mean I'd toss it on the scrap heap.

And now the dreaded car analogy:

Think of Chrome and Opera as Ferraris and Firefox as a Range Rover - you wouldn't go grocery shopping in a Ferrari, or visit Home Depot for building supplies. It's a "show car" to proclaim "Look at me, look at me..." while the Range Rover gets the job(s) done just as well, at a somewhat slower pace, with a helluvalot more functionality from start to finish.

It's Firefox for me all the way... YMMV, and your insurance rates too... :)

As for the Safari thing, it should have been left in the poll... you're asking people to participate in a discussion of popular browsers in use today and it's simply unfair to skew things towards the ones you did include. If you can put Safari back in, that's recommended. Some people do use it and prefer it, that's the only fair thing to do.
 
Chrome pisses me off simply because it makes its' own downloads folder in the users "My Documents" folder, when there's already a "Downloads" folder in the users folder.
 
My main and favorite browser has been and still is Firefox, and most of what Bahamut mentioned applies to me too, but I occasionally fire up Chrome when Firefox has issues with a site. If Chrome has a problem with that site too than I'll try internet explorer 8. Opera is a great browser, but I never liked its gui.
 
I like my skins and add-on's - Firefox for me. IE's just a backup - even though I never have to open it..... ever. The others I couldn't care less about. I have no reason to even look at them.
 
I tried liking Chrome, I really did. I'm just so used to everything in Firefox that I won't be able to switch. Maybe if Chrome had every addon that I use available, but even still...

These days, if Firefox can't handle a site for me (for some reason Careerbuilder is borked with FF), I fire up IE instead.

I have switched to chrome for majority of my browsing now.
I use FF for Roboform still, and some of the other add-ons not available in Chrome :(
 
I went from FF > Chrome > FF. I've tried Chrome more and more and I still can't use it full time. They finally have extensions (Adblock being the biggest I wanted), but all it does is hide ads, not block them. You still see them DL and then "disappear", and if they have sound, you won't see the ad but you hear the sound. The other things I dislike about Chrome is that it doesn't properly handle Shoutcast links (and the miniplayer does not work in Chrome), and Logmein works with Chrome but it uses Java instead of a plugin like FF uses.

Sounds like you haven't actually used Chrome.
 
I keep up with the nightly builds of Chrome and Chromium, and I tend to favor SRWare Iron in a portable version as well, been doing that for some time but, Firefox still wins overall for me as stated.
 
I've been using Firefox as my main browser since 2005 and never had a major issue with it. Once I try a product and like it I usually stick with it until something vastly better comes along or I experience major issues with it on a steady basis. I've tried most of the browsers out there and found nothing that makes me want to leave Firefox. I use two extensions, NoScript and AdblockPlus and i'm good to go.

I could go into greater detail, but just get Chrome and download something, and then find out that the downloaded item isn't in the same folder that every other browser uses by default.

I agree on this, but it doesn't stop me from using chrome...

Used to use FF only, but now it just seems like overkill for just browsing and downloading...
 
After being a long time Firefox lover, I've made the switch to Opera. I used 10.53 for a while, and after digging around forums for ways to have it mimic certain Firefox features(can't be mentioned here) it became my default. Even running the new 10.60 Alpha, I've yet to come across and issues with the program itself or any incompatibles with websites I visit.
 
Google Chrome hands down. I was a hardcore Firefox user before Chrome, but once I downloaded Chrome just to try it (fully expecting to go back to Firefox like always) I just never looked back. Much faster (especially much faster than FF on my Mac!) and the extensions are really coming into their own now (although there is still room for improvement, of course).

Chrome can get a little wonky with Flash (but that's more Flash's fault than Chrome) but other than that it is hands down a superior browser to all the other one's I've ever used. I can see some people still sticking with FF on Windows but if you have a Mac, seriously get Chrome! I guarantee you will notice a big speed and overall performance increase. Even on Windows if you do a lot of multitasking killing Firefox and using Chrome can be helpful for resource management on your PC.

Just for the record, thats a very petty thing to even waste your words on lol. i know how its properly spelled, but i have this mild OCD thing where I like to Capitalize certain words and letters.


you all have great points, I agree with 90% of them. I do think google chrome is slightly faster then FireFox (still gonna cap both the F's lol) but overall I think Firefox is the best Browser out there.

I am surprised tho to see that not a lot of people like opera. I thought it was a lil more popular then that, and I have some friends who swear by it, Personally I hate the PC version, but I love the iPhone/Android version, I just wish there would be a FireFox mobile for iPhone but from what I've seen,heard and read, its not gonna happen.

SO ! my next question is, whats your guys favorite mobile browser. I cant start a poll on this one, since I don't want to start a whole new thread, but lets hear them opinions.

State your choice, and reasons why !
 
Definitely Firefox for me. I have Chrome installed and like it, but I keep going back to Firefox because it's customized just the way I want it and has everything I need with add-ons. Chrome is good, it's just not great.

I also have to use IE8 occasionally (how someone makes a webpage nowadays that only works in IE and not Firefox baffles me). I could use the "IE Tab" add-on, but IE is already installed and it's actually not a bad browser, so I don't mind firing it up every now and then for the random webpage that I need to view in it.
 
voted for IE, not a fan but a window with an address bar and tabs is all I need.
writing now from the goggle chrome I just installed, it’s nice. liked the URL suggestions, and. there is a heavy site where my P4 PC at work struggles to handle five pages of it. chrome seemed to handle it better. but still, old habits die hard so i'll stick to IE.
 
Firefox hands down. I've been using it for a loooooonnnnggggg time now. I've tried Chrome and Safari (just got a mac) but keep coming back to Firefox. It's just superb. Great addons, clean, sleek, never had it crash or any issues.

Where did I say that? Or even imply it? Chrome itself is a great browser, but any program that crates it's own sub-directory folder in the user's folder (especially where it doesn't make sense) is a dick move by the developers. I know it can be changed, fairly easily too. It's the principle of the thing. I should have to change it in the first place.
