At home I'm running a Core2Quad rig that has 4GB of RAM, a fast RAID array, and Windows 7 x64 on it. That part of my machine is just fine. During my tests, I'm not seeing these bottleneck.

Recently, I'm seeing myself become video bottlenecked because I'm driving 5040x1050 across a Matrox TripleHead2Go from a 9800GX2.

I don't play bleeding edge FPS or anything like that. I use my TH2Go rig almost exclusively for Flight Simulator and (particularly) X-Plane.

Anyone have recommendations for what my next step should be?

Well sounds like you have your mind already made up.
 
There isn't much to choose from if you only want nvidia. Looks like you'll be getting a fermi or a gtx 295 anything else isn't a worthwhile upgrade.

PhysX is a NVIDIA technology... OBVIOUSLY not meant to work well with ATI

You ever run some FORD parts in a TOYOTA???

Uhhh...

If you must have a Nvidia card, then at that res you need aGTX 480 SLI setup.

Or you could...you know... make the logical choice and buy a 5970 or even 2 of them.
 
You should get a 5870 instead...

its perfect for you TBH.

and PhysX? psh.. you play Batman all day or something? if thats the case.. just buy a cheap nVidia card for dedicated physX, how hard is that ? :confused:

I already have a PhysX card -- the original AGEIA card. In my research it was my understanding that PhysX doesn't work at all with ATi cards. That there was some kind of driver level exclusivity.
 
At that resolution I will go with Fermi or a 295 like someone else mentioned previously.

uh...

using the hacked driver fix everything :p

and since you already have a T-Head, I guess GTX 480 is fine if you can stay with that heat and power consumption...

if not, 5870 will be the best choice of all with native triple screen support..

Yes the Nvidia driver scans your PC and if it detects an ATI card it disables GPU accelerated PhysX on your PPU/dedicated GPU. There's a simple spoof to trick the driver scan so the Nvidia driver doesn't detect your ATI card and therefore doesn't disable PhysX for no reason.

Since you already have the TH2Go I wouldn't bother setting up Eyefinity but I'd still suggest a 5870 unless you want to camp out for a GTX 470. It'll run the resolution fine since you said you aren't running that demanding of games, but I'm also not sure why you're worried about GPU accelerated PhysX since it's only even used in Batman and Mirror's Edge. But it's easy to get around it anyway.
 
If Nvidia was a bit less anti-competitive when it came to PhysX, I'd be more for it. Even if they never licensed PhysX to run on ATI cards, if they at least supported a dedicated Nvidia PhysX card in a system with ATI GPUs, I could go for it.

As it is, though, PhysX, as Nvidia currently is using it, is not attractive to me at all. It is bad for the graphics card industry, in my opinion. PhysX may be in a few games, but I imagine hardware support for it is going to go the way of EAX; used here and there, but it won't be very prevalent at all.
 
Just to be clear, I'm not primarily using PhysX for games. I think I own one game that uses the PhysX hardware (Mirror's Edge).

I use the PhysX programming API and the hardware acceleration to do physics and electrical modeling in MATLAB since MATLAB (with the appropriate blocksets installed) supports the PhysX hardware .
 
does anyone know where I could find benchmark tables that compare the 2xx and 4xx series cards against something like a 9800GX2 SLI rig (if I were to go that route).

I looked here on [H] and on the almighty google and I didn't see anything (but my keywords might be wrong)
 
if you need extra hardware support for intensive physx programming then I believe 480 is the way to go.

That's not what this thread is about at all. I didn't realize at first that going with ATi precluded using my PhysX card. I'm happy with the PhysX card.

I am contemplating upgrading/replacing my video card because I am getting video bottlenecked when I fly in some flight simulators, particularly X-Plane at 5040x1050.

I don't need anything "extra" in the way of PhysX -- I just don't want to lose what I already have since I need it.
