Physics...noobie question

How do you set it up? I have a 9600GT 512MB and a 8800GTS 320MB, how do I go about setting them up for Physics?
 
Stick both into your system, install the latest WHQL nVidia drivers, then go to the control panel and choose which card to run PhysX on.
 
Am I doing something wrong? The main GPU is the GTX 280 and the Physx card is the 8800 GT

I have all the update driver but for somereason, my fan on the 8800GT runs 100% and stays there. I also don't have a drop down menu?

ok, not so much, but heres the deal
You need to make that card think you have a monitor plugged in there. What I did was take one of those DVI to VGA converter dongles, do the three resistor trick, and tape the hell out of it and WALA! it works, and I must say, after doing the Cryostasis demo, I think Physx might finally get its break out app.

For info on how to do the mod, look under Distributed computing, there is a GPU guide in there somewhere, and it has details on it in there

Good luck, and that 8800GT should make a nice Physx card, Im using a 8800GTX for rendering and a 9600GSO (chopped down 8800GTS) as Physx, and I love it, and yours has one more bank of shader cores on it. I know not much uses it, but Im really hoping this takes off, it could do so much

So from what I read and since i'm a Vista user, Apperently XP users don't have this issue??? I need to make a VGA dummy with three 75ohms resistors.. No wonder I was stumped. I also find some intresting things about folding... I'm going have to check that out. thanks alot :D
 
No problem, just let me know if you run into any problems, but that dummy plug should clear it all up


also, when you get everything working, get the cryostasis tech demo and run that bad boy, its got the best use pf Physx hands down
 
So, if I understand it correctly, without this 'three resistor trick' the whole Physx thing wouldn't work at all, is that what this all meant?
 
why do you need to hack in some resistor to turn physx on?

Vista will turn off your secondary vid card if a monitor or SLI bridge is not attached. The resistor mod tricks Vista into thinking a monitor is attached, so it stays on and you can use it for PhysX
 
and this is the only way to get physx to work on vista?.. that is some pretty shoddy drivers, then.. don't you think?

It's a power saving policy in Vista. When this policy was designed, they didn't think of the possibility of videocards being used without an actual monitor attached.
This is fixed in Windows 7, and there might be a patch for Vista at some point.
 
Of course, the kicker hereby is that you can't change this policy anywhere within Vista without the use of a hex editor. This is one point where I must admit that Linux and similar are less frustrating than Windows OSs.

No, but I suppose that Windows can only detect the presence of a monitor through the video card driver... so I'm quite sure that nVidia can 'pretend' that there's a monitor connected when the GPU is in PhysX mode (I believe the TV Out works the same way, it can't be detected like a regular VGA/DVI connection, so it is just faked to 'always on').

This is one point where I must admit that Linux and similar are less frustrating than Windows OSs.

um this might sound stupid, but i just had to ask.

In vista, could you not just plug in a second monitor into the second vid card, then toggle the physics, then unplug the monitor?

Or

Just get another monitor plug it into the 2nd vid card and leave it, and use it as a dual monitor setup?

I only have one vid card and i use both the DVI outputs on my dual monitor setup, i dont see what the problem would be with using a dedicated video card for a second monitor would be? (unless there are driver issues).
 
So uhh, noob question. What's the advantage of putting a standalone physX capable nvidia card vs your regular SLI setup such as mine? Am I missing out on something here? I know those silly nvidia physX demos work fine...???

It's about shared resources versus dedicated. Graphics rendering and physics both require a certain workload, if the GPU is powerful enough (285/295) it should be no issue even at higher resolutions with current PhysX-enabled games. With a lower-powered GPU, however, having a dedicated PhysX GPU helps to offload the physics workload, increasing the FPS.

Whether or not it'd benefit you to have a dedicated PhysX card depends fully on what your setup is and at what resolutions you game. If you have an up-to-date SLI setup (GF9+), I can not see a good reason to add another card for PhysX only at this point.

Some people on this forum have posted some benchmarks using games and such comparing various GPUs with and without PhysX acceleration (single GPU or dedicated PhysX). Might be worth a search :)

Thanks Elledan. Was just wondering. I guess if and when this physX thing ever takes off, I'll be glad I went with Nvidia instead.
 
Look online and try to find the setup already benchmarked that your wanting to go with,as adding a card just for physx as been known to slow your fps down a good bit.
