A week ago I moved offices where I work and I brought my computer with me. It was powered up in the morning and I had it all set up at the new office before lunch. It was maybe a 10 minute walk to the new place. I came back after lunch and started working on it, and by 3:30 it locked up and crashed. No biggie, restart it. Doesn't boot past Windows screen. Try safe mode, nope. Try a chkdsk.. fails at 50% saying theres an unrecoverable hard drive error. Take the hard drive to IT and they got files off of it but they say it just stop spinning. Drive is basically dead. End of story.

Also a week ago I'm moving into a new house. Load my desktop computer into the car, drive it over, leave it in a spare room. Finally got around to hooking it up yesterday and it won't even post. No BIOS screen. There's a thing in the back thats hooked up to 4 LEDs which tell me if there's a problem. Look up in the manual and it says CPU is broken or not working. I take off heatsink and reset the processor, same thing. Nothing. Maybe its processor, maybe its mobo, maybe its PSU.. don't know. But its dead.

Is this just bad coincidence? What precautions do you use when moving computers? Am I just a curse to computers? I'm thinking about replacing my computer anyway but should I be worried that I'll fry that the next time I move?
 
What I usually do when moving computers, is I keep the box and packaging from the case, and put the whole thing in the box. Usually my worst problem is that a cable or something needs to be reseated.
 
I must say this is strange indeed, since I am a college student, and I end up moving my computer a ton, between home and school and this has never happened to me.

I don't do anything special, just unplug everything and turn off the psu.

If you want to be really careful, you could probably take out the hard drive and cards, and transport those separately.

I really don't see a cpu being damaged by just some moving around. Must be some bad luck for you heh. :(
 
There's either a lot of static electricity where you are, or its just coincidence. As the poster above noted, I move computers physically all the time and nothing usually goes wrong.
 
One time such a thing happened to a friend of my family. Turned out that one of the RAM modules had worked itself just loose enough to make POST fail. Of course, I discovered it only after the mainboard was replaced :p
