Physical to Virtual for Hyper-V

How do you go about taking a physical machine and converting it to a virtual one to run inside Hyper-V?

How do drivers and stuff work, like if i converted my gaming PC from physical to virtual what happens to the nvidia drivers and all that?

Is there a special tool used for this?
 
i just did this. I used true image home 2011, and cloned a disk to another hd. i then put that hd in the 2008 server and set that up as a vm. I used fix_ide in ubcd4win to remove the old raid drivers and install new ones and it booted up first shot.

You can use dsk2vhd or vmwares own .p2v converter then use starwood's converter to convert to .vhd. Ive tried both and did not have success,

You shouldnt have issues if you go with like hardware. meaning intel and intel etc. you can sysprep it too.

Acronis has a tool which is useful. Virtual Machine Manager can also do the business.

Ok so im moving my whs over to 2008 r2 going to run whs in hyper-v. I used disk2vhd to make it a vm and that worked so far. I have a 500gig in the whs that has the 20gig whs OS and the rest is the pool. Do i want to disk2vhd the c: and d: or just the OS partition? How do i get the rest of the data off the 500gb thats in the pool?

Should i vm that whole 500gb and then make a virtual 500gb in hyper-v?

When you make the new thread, please provide more details on the current disks setup.
How many? What size?
is the 500gb thats in the Pool, the entire pool? Is there data on the OS drive? Do you have a lot custom stuff setup on your WHS?
 
I've multiple times used VMware's P2V tool, then used a VMware to Hyper-V converter successfully.

You need to be aware of different supported hardware inside hypervisor however.

So you can do a Physical-Virtual conversion on a remote machine and send it to the ESXi server?

Like install the converter on one machine, give it the machine's IP address/Admin account you want to convert and send it from that machine to the ESXi server? Or does each machine need a local install of the VMware converter?

How does it do that? crazy stuff!
 
You can select a remote computer using vmware converter. No it does not need to be installed locally.
